Die Hauptgruppenelemente spielen Schlüsselrollen in fast allen Gebieten der Chemie, von den fundamentalen Bindungsmotiven kleiner Moleküle bis zum Design und der Anwendung von Funktionsmaterialien. Unser Forschungsgebiet auf diesem Feld umfasst die Synthese von niedervalenten Verbindungen der Elemente der 13., 14. und 15. Gruppe des Periodensystems. Dabei nutzen wir die kinetische und thermodynamische Stabilisierung durch N-heterozyklische Metallylen-Donor-Liganden (Si, Ge, Sn, Pb). Solche niedervalenten Hauptgruppenspezies weisen einzigartige elektronische Strukturen auf. Neben dem Vorhandensein von vakanten Koordinationsstellen sind das Donor- sowie Akzeptor-Orbitale in der Valenzschale. Dadurch können diese Spezies nicht nur als vielseitige Vorläufer für neuartige Funktionsmaterialien, sondern auch als leistungsfähige Liganden in Übergangsmetall-vermittelter Katalyse dienen.
