Where is democracy? And where are we? Is there democracy? If yes, how many?

Do we need ethics or sustainability in engineering? / Brauchen wir Ethik und Nachhhaltigkeit im Ingenieurwesen?
How to decide on this question? / Wie entscheiden wir über diese Frage?

SEFI Spring School 2024 / SEFI Frühjahrsschule 2024 auf Englisch
jointly organized by the two
SEFI Special Interest Groups on Ethics and Sustainability

10 - 12 April 2024 at TU Berlin

Inspiration for the title of the spring school - Children’s Book: Crocodile or Octopus?

The children’s book “Kroko oder Krake? Du musst dich entscheiden!” (“Crocodile or Octopus? You have to decide!”) by Jörg Mühle sets the tone for the spring school. The picture book gives a choice on each page, for instance whether you want to live in a huge mansion or a small house, whether you want to be raised by a serpent or an eagle, whether you want to get lost in the woods or in a crowd and of course if you would rather have a crocodile under your bed or an octopus in your bathtub. In engineering and higher education we are confronted with this every day. However while growing up we tend to reduce arising questions to all or nothing dilemmas that have only one valid answer. With this spring school we want to reflect on who gets to ask the questions and how to answer them as well as who gets to represent the choices and how to choose. And yes, we also want to regain a bit of playfulness in order to find creative solutions for what lies ahead.

Call for Participation
Expression of interest due by 12 January 2024.

Was letztendlich geschehen wird, hängt davon ab, was jede:r Einzelne mitbringt.

2022 ENHANCE CritS Week - Critical Sustainability Summer School - 25 > 29 July 2022 at TU Berlin - Short Report

In the last week of July 2022 TU Berlin was host to 24 students of 16 different study programs of the ENHANCE University Alliance, which comprises seven leading universities of technology in Europe. The participants first participated in the online Critical Sustainability (CritS) course and then applied their knowledge and competences in the concrete context of the Enhance CritS Week. The summer school was conducted as a blended intensive program within the Erasmus+ framework.

One of the factors that makes promoting a summer school special is that, unlike most other educational formats, it involves a great amount of hospitality. The role of the lecturers is expanded to that of hosts. Many times, one of the first things a host does when receiving a guest, is give them an overview of what’s around, handing them a map. During the CritS Week, we flipped this dynamic: the participants received blank maps to fill with their own experiences, impressions, and interactions throughout the week. Instead of telling the participants where to go and what to see, we provided them with a set of modes of approaching the city and the people within it.

The participants went out on their first adventure to collect an object on the campus and then analyze it through some of the tools introduced in the previous online phase / Based on the activity of constructing a “dream city” together, we had an intense and fruitful discussion on democracy and its limits / Through an extensive bike tour we expanded our perception of the city to think of it as a place of political and collective action / We tried out different ways of governing the common resource of our shared time / Through a point-and-click adventure we found ways to get in touch with other people in the city / …

The interventions that arose as the final product of this week of intensive exchange sum up well the topics that most occupied our discussions. Mobiles collectively made out of beer lids collected from the streets were hung on trees bringing up the question of the borders between humanity and nature / Flash mobs in Potsdam and in Berlin reminded passersby that there is more to life in the city than only hustle / An invitation to have a chat about the history of the city (and the histories it could have had instead) while walking through James-Simon Park may have contributed to a spark of participatory energy, opening some eyes to the possibility to change history / …

We asked “what happened?” and “what have you learnt?” again and again and the answers would keep changing ever so often. One of the key learning is that there are many different maps of Berlin as a city as there are people living in it - and now there are 24 more individual maps - one from every participant and one for us as a group.

Nachhaltigkeitszertifikate und Sustainable Development Goals - 8. Vernetzungsworkshop - 17. Dezember 2021 - Online

Was verbindet und was unterscheidet die Zertifikate?
