Recycling a Building: Workshop on Methods of Documentation and Sustainable Rehabilitation of Endangered Architectural Heritage in Erbil

The Workshop on Methods of Documentation and Sustainable Rehabilitation of Endangered Architectural Heritage in Erbil is an initiative to address the preservation of Erbil's historic buildings. It emphasizes sustainable and resource-efficient rehabilitation, mainly through utilizing local materials and recycling existing building components.

This workshop is designed for young professionals from Iraq, preferably those residing in Erbil. Suitable candidates would be those with a degree in Architecture, Archaeology, or Civil Engineering or those nearing the completion of such degrees with demonstrable experience in archaeology or heritage conservation. The primary objective of this capacity-building program is to facilitate in-depth dialogue and exchange on contemporary practices in heritage conservation.

The workshop is structured into diverse thematic segments, spanning four weeks in Erbil and two weeks of online blocks. Practical sessions are conducted in the Old City of Erbil, while theoretical modules will be hosted at the facilities of the Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities and Heritage (IICAH) in Erbil.

With a distinct emphasis on hands-on learning and interdisciplinary collaboration, the curriculum encompasses a range of heritage and conservation areas. These include building survey and architectural archaeology, damage mapping and assessment, and conservation and restoration planning. Additionally, the workshop aims to elevate awareness of these themes within the local community.

This workshop is an initiative of the Department of Building Archaeology and Conservation at the Technical University of Berlin. Organized in collaboration with Wadi e.V. and in partnership with the Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities and Heritage (IICAH), it also aligns with the Directorate General of Antiquities and the Supreme Council for the Restoration of the Citadel of Erbil - HCRH.

Generously supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the project underscores the paramount importance of preserving Erbil's architectural heritage.

The call for applications remains open until August 20th, 2023. Detailed application requirements can be found in the attached poster. Applicants must be aware that the workshop is not limited to theoretical sessions; it involves daily practical work with materials like mud. Prospective participants should be prepared for hands-on engagement with these resources.
