Academic Choices – Non-Academic Choices: Deciding Between the Two
October 5, 2023, 10.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m., online
In the years following the completion of their Ph.D., many graduates are faced with the question of whether to stay in academia or to pursue a career outside of academia. This is not an easy question to answer, especially since there are very few permanent positions available in academia. How can postdocs make a good decision? What skills are in demand inside and outside academia? What can help to assess the chances of success as realistically as possible? In this short online workshop, we will explore these questions and develop initial hypotheses based on the participants' individual situations.

Academic Choices – Achieving Success
October 18, 2023, 10.00 a.m. - 16.00 p.m., Humboldt Graduate School, Luisenstr. 56, r. 123
Many young scientists choose an academic career because they are passionate about their research topic and value the freedom of academia. The postdoctoral phase sets the course for success in academia. What are the paths to professorship? How can this phase be structured to maximize the chances of success? What else is important besides enthusiasm for the subject? These questions will be addressed in this workshop so that each participant is clear about the next steps.

Non-Academic Choices – Mastering the Transition
October 19, 2023, 10.00 a.m. - 16.00 p.m., Humboldt Graduate School, Luisenstr. 56, r. 123
Many graduate students leave academia in search of greater security, better working conditions, more direct opportunities to make a difference, higher income, or a better fit between their work and their own goals, values, and talents. Often, however, they have little experience in the non-university laboratory that is our marketplace. This makes it difficult for them to assess their own skills, and it can make potential employers reluctant to hire them. In the long run, however, the transition from a PhD to a non-academic career is very well managed. In the short term, this transition is a challenge for many postdocs: What are the possible fields of work? How can one realistically assess one's own skills and communicate them appropriately? This workshop provides a framework for developing an individual action plan for this transition.
