The placement test is mandatory for all students who have previous knowledge of the language of instruction and have not completed a previous language course at the ZEMS in the respective language in the previous semester.
The placement test allows you to learn with other students who are at a similar level.
After completing the placement test, the points and the level will be displayed. If the level achieved is not displayed, please contact info(at)zems.tu-berlin.de.
The summer semester begins on 17.04.2023. The dates for registration for the ZEMS language courses will be announced in advance.
If you have previous knowledge of the language and have not taken a course at the ZEMS in this language before, please take a placement test before registering. On the website of the language of your choice, you will find a link to the Moodle platform of the ZEMS in the respective levels. There, click on the button "book now" for the desired language course (this button will only be activated on the registration date!).
If the course is fully booked, the button "Waiting list" will appear. If you click on it, you will be put on a waiting list and notified by e-mail if there are free places. After successful registration you will receive a confirmation by e-mail.
Moodle and ISIS are two different systems and not synchronised. Please log in with your TUB-Account under moodle.zems.tu-berlin.de. After it you will find your language course.
Due to high demand, we recommend that you register by the time indicated on the website on the day of registration in order to get a place on the course. If all places are taken, you have the option to be placed on the waiting list. You will automatically receive an e-mail as soon as a place becomes available.
No. If you have previous knowledge of the language you wish to learn, you must take the placement test. Students whose placement results differ by two or more levels from the required entry level cannot participate in the course. In this case, it is essential that you contact the administrative office of the ZEMS to cancel the course.

Generally, there is a minimum of 15 students per course, with a maximum of 22 students. In special cases, there may also be smaller or larger language learning groups.
The number of bookings is limited to a total of two bookings in two languages per person due to high demand and long waiting lists. In exceptional cases, more than two bookings are possible, please contact the administrative office of the ZEMS.
TU-Students who have received a nomination in the International Affairs Department for a place on an exchange program can register by mail to sekretariat(at)zems.tu-berlin.de for a language course in the language of the destination country after publication of the course offer until 04.10.2022. Please indicate the desired course number, your matriculation number and your degree program and enclose the confirmation of the International Department.
The pre-semester German course is aimed at students who will begin their studies in the coming semester as part of a scholarship program.
Due to a high demand only TU-Students can attend to the pre-semester German course at the moment.
Since all levels are offered, you do not need a specific level. However, for ERASMUS students, in accordance with the ERASMUS agreements of the TU Berlin with its partner universities, the courses are only offered from level B1.
The language courses of the ZEMS are principally for the students of the TU Berlin. Students from other universities and externals can only participate in face-to-face events and only on a space-available basis. Please send an email to mediothek(at)zems.tu-berlin.de from 10/24/2022 to find out if there is still a place available in the course you would like to attend. If this is the case, staff members of the TU Berlin as well as guest and external students may also participate, see the regulation terms.
Please always notify the administration office of a cancellation, because only then do students on the waiting lists still have a chance of getting a place. As soon as a place has become available, several people on the waiting lists are automatically notified and can then register online. All registrations are processed in the order in which they are received.

Payment of the participation fees is made by direct debit. Usually, the fees are collected approximately one week after the start of the course. We would like to expressly point out that courses can generally only be booked as a whole course, not by the hour. If a direct debit cannot be honoured, e.g. due to the entry of incorrect account data or insufficient funds in the account, the student must bear the costs incurred. If a course is not held due to an insufficient number of registrations, the fee will not be collected. Questions regarding payment should be addressed to the administration office of the ZEMS, Ms. Borowski (e-mail: borowski(at)zems.tu-berlin.de).
Cancellation is possible up to 7 days after the start of the course (for intensive courses up to 2 days after the start of the course). Cancellations must always be sent in writing to the administration office by e-mail sekretariat(at)zems.tu-berlin.de. The fees will be refunded minus the cancellation fee of € 5.00 if the cancellation is made within the deadline. No refund of the fee will be made for cancellations after the deadline.
Changes are only possible if there are still places available in the desired course. Please contact your teacher first. Subsequent changes can only be made via the administration office of the ZEMS.
Unfortunately, no. For the intensive language courses, you will receive a payment request after registration with a payment deadline that must be met.
