Welcome to the Modern Language Center (ZEMS) of the Technische Universität Berlin.

The Modern Languages Center (ZEMS) is the language center of the Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin). The courses of the ZEMS are primarily aimed at students of all faculties, but also at scientists of the TUB and other interested parties.

By teaching language and intercultural skills, the ZEMS courses make a decisive contribution to the successful implementation of the TU Berlin's internationalization strategy. Through their content orientation, the language courses directly promote student mobility and academic success as well as success in internships in Germany and abroad. Extensive language skills also qualify our graduates for the globalized job market.

Language and cultural skills are essential for an internationally positioned and visible university – the language courses at ZEMS make an indispensable contribution in this field. The specific profile of ZEMS is its focus on communication in science and technology in different languages.

How does the registration work?

If you have previous knowledge of the language and have not taken a course at the ZEMS in this language before, please take a placement test before registering. On the website of the language of your choice, you will find a link to the Moodle platform of the ZEMS in the respective levels. There, click on the button "book now" for the desired language course (this button will only be activated on the registration date!).

If the course is fully booked, the button "Waiting list" will appear. If you click on it, you will be put on a waiting list and notified by e-mail if there are free places. After successful registration you will receive a confirmation by e-mail.

I cannot find the language course on ISIS.

Moodle and ISIS are two different systems and not synchronised. Please log in with your TUB-Account under moodle.zems.tu-berlin.de. After it you will find your language course.

Registration has recently been opened and all places are already taken.

Due to high demand, we recommend that you register by the time indicated on the website on the day of registration in order to get a place on the course. If all places are taken, you have the option to be placed on the waiting list. You will automatically receive an e-mail as soon as a place becomes available.

Can I register in any level?

No. If you have previous knowledge of the language you wish to learn, you must take the placement test. Students whose placement results differ by two or more levels from the required entry level cannot participate in the course. In this case, it is essential that you contact the administrative office of the ZEMS to cancel the course.

Please note that the fee regulations apply.

How many students take part in the language course?

Generally, there is a minimum of 15 students per course, with a maximum of 22 students. In special cases, there may also be smaller or larger language learning groups.

I want to register for several language courses, but Moodle does not allow me to register any more. What can I do?

The number of bookings is limited to a total of two bookings in two languages per person due to high demand and long waiting lists. In exceptional cases, more than two bookings are possible, please contact the administrative office of the ZEMS.

Placement Test

Do I have to take a placement test?

The placement test is mandatory for all students who have previous knowledge of the language of instruction and have not completed a previous language course at the ZEMS in the respective language in the previous semester.

Why is the placement test important?

The placement test allows you to learn with other students who are at a similar level.

How often can I take the placement test?

Once per semester.

Where do I find the results of the placement test?

After completing the placement test, the points and the level will be displayed. If the level achieved is not displayed, please contact beratung(at)zems.tu-berlin.de.

Pre-registration

TU-Students who have received a nomination in the International Affairs Department for a place on an exchange program can register by mail to sekretariat(at)zems.tu-berlin.de for a language course in the language of the destination country after publication of the course offer until 04.10.2022. Please indicate the desired course number, your matriculation number and your degree program and enclose the confirmation of the International Department.

External guest and students

Who can take part of the language course offered at the ZEMS?

The language courses of the ZEMS are principally for the students of the TU Berlin.

Depending on the number of places available, staff members of the TU Berlin as well as guest and external students may also participate, see the regulation terms.

Due to the high demand, only students of the TU Berlin can participate in the online courses of the ZEMS.

Waiting list registration

How can I cancel the registration?

Please always notify the administration office of a cancellation, because only then do students on the waiting lists still have a chance of getting a place. As soon as a place has become available, several people on the waiting lists are automatically notified and can then register online. All registrations are processed in the order in which they are received.

Payment / Cancellation

How high are the fees for students?

 TU-StudentsExtern/ TU-employees

How do I pay for the language course?

Payment of the participation fees is made by direct debit. Usually, the fees are collected approximately one week after the start of the course. We would like to expressly point out that courses can generally only be booked as a whole course, not by the hour. If a direct debit cannot be honoured, e.g. due to the entry of incorrect account data or insufficient funds in the account, the student must bear the costs incurred. If a course is not held due to an insufficient number of registrations, the fee will not be collected. Questions regarding payment should be addressed to the administration office of the ZEMS, Ms. Borowski (e-mail: borowski(at)zems.tu-berlin.de).

Can I cancel the language course?

Cancellation is possible up to 7 days after the start of the course (for intensive courses up to 2 days after the start of the course). Cancellations must always be sent in writing to the administration office by e-mail sekretariat(at)zems.tu-berlin.de. The fees will be refunded minus the cancellation fee of € 5.00 if the cancellation is made within the deadline. No refund of the fee will be made for cancellations after the deadline.

My language course has already started and I would like to change to another course. Is that possible?

Changes are only possible if there are still places available in the desired course. Please contact your teacher first. Subsequent changes can only be made via the administration office of the ZEMS.

I am still abroad, waiting for my visa and have just registered for an intensive language course during the semester break. Can I pay the fees at the start of the course?

Unfortunately, no. For the intensive language courses, you will receive a payment request after registration with a payment deadline that must be met.

I have registered for a language certificate. How can I cancel this booking?

Cancellation is possible up to 3 days before the appointment. Please send a e-mail to sekretariat(at)zems.tu-berlin.de. Cancellations are only possible in writing. Credit points transfer / accreditation

I have received a certificate of academic achievement in my language course. Will the transcript of records be forwarded to the examination office?

At the beginning of the lecture period, all students who attend language courses will be informed by e-mail about the application deadlines and application procedures. If you have registered for the examination, then the grade will be forwarded to the examination office after successful completion of the course.

How can the credit points of my certificate of academic achievement be credited?

You must register the language course as an elective module or additional module at the beginning of the semester at the Examinations Office. Please note the information provided by the ZEMS at the beginning of the semester and the deadlines of the examination office.

To register my course with the examination office, I can choose between a free elective module (= elective module) or an additional module. What is the difference?

The free choice or the elective module serves to deepen and sharpen the study profile in a self-determined way. A module catalogue for free choice can be found under Studies and Teaching on the websites of the respective faculty. The language courses of the ZEMS are independent modules and count as part of this module.

An additional module is neither a compulsory nor an elective module, but a module that can be taken in addition to the credit points required for one's own degree program.

Please contact the student advisory service for your subject area for information on credit points and credit transfer.

I have taken a language course this semester and would like to have the credit points credited in the next semester. Is this possible?

No. You can only register in the current semester, considering the applicable deadlines.
