Water Resources Management and Modeling of Hydrosystems

Field of competence Hydrosciences

Qualification goals and employment areas

Based on a related bachelor in-depth methodic skills as well as scientific and practise-related contents are introduced specifically focusing on indisciplinary methods and techniques. Master degree holder are enabled to self-dependently work on scientific and technical tasks in the hydrosciences and to collaborate in current research and practically-oriented projects. The research-oriented character of the master qualifies for high level work in the hydrosciences as well as for a doctoral thesis.

The focus of the specialisation in Water Resources Management and Modeling of Hydrosystems which is mainly given in English is in the application and development of simulation methods for hydro- and environmental engineering, while the focus of the specialisation in Urban Water Management is in planning, dimensioning, operation and optimisation of urban water management facilities and mainly given in German.

After completion of the master degree holders can work in research institutions, national and international engineering offices and consulting companies, operators of the above-mentioned facilities, software developers and public services (e.g. federal offices, regional or municipal public authorities).

Study plans

The field of competence Hydrosciences can be chosen as one of two fields of competence in the master program in Civil Engineering, the amount of credits is 24 ECTS and includes one student research project (6 ECTS). A double specialisation in Hydrosciences is also possible, in case the amount of credits is 48 ECTS including two student research projects (12 ECTS).

When selecting the specialisation Water Resources Management and Modeling of Hydrosystems (24 ECTS) the following modules are recommended:

  • Water Resources Management (6 ECTS, WS)
  • Modeling of Hydro- and Environmental Systems (6 ECTS, SS)
  • Student Research Project / Studienarbeit (6 ECTS, WS oder SS)
  • Siedlungswasserwirtschaft (6 ECTS, WS) or Kolloquium Wasserwesen (3 ECTS in WS and 3 ECTS in SS; the module can also be chosen with 3 ECTS only in WS or SS) or Specific Topics of Hydro- and Environmental Engineering (Short Courses in WS and SS; the module can also be chosen with 3 ECTS only in WS or SS) or another module of the specialisation Urban Water Management

When selecting the specialisation Urban Water Management (24 ECTS) the following modules are recommended:

  • Siedlungswasserwirtschaft (6 LP, WS)
  • Water Resources Management (6 LP, WS)
  • Aspekte der siedlungswasserwirtschaftlichen Planung (6 LP, WS) and/or Besondere Verfahren und Betriebsweisen der Abwassertechnik (6 LP, SS)
  • Student Research Project / Studienarbeit (6 LP, WS oder SS)
  • Moderne Sanitärsysteme (3 LP, SS), Kolloquium Wasserwesen (3 LP/6 LP in WS or/and in SS) and the modules of the specialisation Water Resources Management and Modeling of Hydrosystems

When selecting the double specialisation Hydrosciences modules amounting to 48 ECTS in total must be chosen from the two above-mentioned specialisations. In case we recommend to make one student research project in each specialization and to chose the Kolloquium Wasserwesen (3 or 6 ECTS).

In addition, further modules out of the field of competence Hydrosciences  can be selected:

  • Up to 18 ECTS from the compulsory optional modules
  • Up to 24 ECTS from the optional modules, however the marks of these modules are not counted for the total grade of the master

For the optional modules we recommend lectures of the following chairs:

School VI Planning Building Environment

  • Chair of Hydrogeology, Institute of Applied Geosciences
  • Chair of Ecohydrology and Landscape Evaluation, Institute of Ecology
  • Chair of Experimental Limnology, Institute of Ecology
  • Chair Geoinformation in Environmental Planning, Institute of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning

School III Process Sciences, Institute of Environmental Science and Technologies

  • Chair of Water Quality Control
  • Chair of Environmental Process Engineering

School V Mechanical Engineering and Transport Systems

  • Chair of Fluid System Dynamics, Institute of Fluid Dynamics and Technical Acoustics

In case of any questions, please consult the professors or scientific staff of the chairs.
