Handbook Transdisciplinary Learning

What is transdisciplinarity – and what are its methods? How does a living lab work? What is the purpose of citizen science, student-organized teaching and cooperative education?

The publication project Handbook Transdiciplinary Learning unpacks key terms and concepts to describe the broad range of transdisciplinary education.

Providing a structured explanation and breakdown of the various teaching perspectives on transdisciplinarity and transformative research, it is intended as an overview and reference work, particularly for students and newcomers to the topic. Its aim at enabling a broad, interested audience to access the current state of the discussion in an easily understandable manner.

The open access publication provides an encyclopedic reference guide to permit access to core concepts of transdisciplinary learning, by explaining its key terms. All articles underwent a double-blind review procedure.

Book-Launch Videos

On the occasion of this publication, reviewers, students, and representatives from culture, business, civil society, and politics met on the campus of TU Berlin in September 2023 to discuss the transformation of learning cultures at universities as well as experiences with transdisciplinary learning techniques. The one-day international conference focused on transdisciplinary educational methods and their potential for future forms of collaboration on the crossroads of academia and society. On the evening, the official book launch took place at Haus der Statistik, introduced by a greeting from Gesine Schwan (Berlin Governance Platform). In her keynote, Maria Ines Plaza Lazo, co-founder and co-editor of Arts of the Working Class, addressed the question of the extent to which an (academic) handbook and a street newspaper share common goals and strategies.
