Chemical & Process Engineering

Physical Chemistry in Process Sciennces

Content

The module is a compulsory module for the courses of study Biotechnology, Technical Environmental Protection and Materials Science. The main focus of the course is to impart basic knowledge in the field of thermodynamics of pure phases and of mixtures, with the aim of calculating phase and reaction equilibria. The learned knowledge is the basis for further courses and relevant for scientific work and industrial practice.

The lecture includes the following main topics:

  • Thermodynamics
    • Main theorems of thermodynamics
    • Thermodynamic properties of ideal and real gases
    • Phase equilibria and stability of pure substances
    • Properties of mixtures
    • Colligative properties
    • Liquid - vapor equilibria of mixtures
    • Liquid - liquid equilibria
    • Liquid - solid equilibria of solutions
    • Interfacial effects
    • Thermodynamic equilibrium of chemical reactions

  • Reaction kinetics
    • Reaction rate and simple rate laws
    • Kinetics of complex reactions
