Urban Water Interfaces

Supervision & timeline

The BoS consists of three to four members, mostly PIs of the TUB and the IGB and their closely cooperating partners, but also members of national (e.g. Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research UFZ, Leipzig) or international research partners (e.g. Netherlands Institute of Ecology NIOO, Wageningen, The Netherlands) or representatives of engineering practice (e.g. Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH Prof. Dr. Sieker IPS, Hoppegarten) or water management (e.g. Berliner Wasserbetriebe BWB). Each BoS has supervisors from at least two of the three fields

  • Water and environmental engineering
  • Natural sciences and ecology
  • Engineering practice, industry or administration

for each doctoral thesis.

The BoS will provide guidance in structuring the research and facilitate interdisciplinary supervision from an early stage to ensure completion of the doctoral theses within three years. The BoS will meet at least twice a year, one of the meetings will be included in the annual summer school and the doctoral researcher will have to write a short protocol. The ‘daily’ supervision will be done in the research groups of the main supervisors, however, some doctoral students also may join the research groups of co-supervisors for some time and specific research tasks (e.g. modelling, experimental work).

The doctoral researchers will have to report regularly about the progress of their work. In addition to the BoS meetings, this starts with the presentation of their research exposé which will be orally presented and critically discussed with all other BoS, and will be continued during the annual summer schools, interim meetings (focussing on the common topics) and other UWI events (e.g. International UWI Conference to be held in March 2020). Furthermore, the doctoral students will report about their progress on internal seminars (e.g. annual doctoral thesis presentations at some chairs of TUB and doctoral colloquium presentations and research group meetings at IGB).
