Welcome to Technische Universität Berlin
Dear Beginning Students and Newly Enrolled Students,
Welcome to Technische Universität Berlin! We are delighted that you have chosen to study at TU Berlin, a future-oriented university with a rich tradition in a leading city of science and research.
For many of you this represents the start of an exciting new chapter in your life. Studying in a degree program and all this brings may be new to you and very different to what you know from school, your traineeship, or experience of work.
As we enter winter semester 21/22 – after more than 1.5 years of the coronavirus pandemic and a severe cyberattack in 2021 – our students continue to face exceptional challenges. Digital teaching, research under pandemic conditions, working from home, empty or closed University buildings, strict hygiene measures, as well as the recovery of many of our administrative processes have significantly shaped our work and activities in the past months. Three fully digital semesters have unfortunately brought an unusual silence to the TU Berlin campus.
Social activities and active campus life are an integral part of studying and your university experience as much as teaching and learning. Innovative science and research for the benefit of society thrive on interdisciplinary, cross-functional exchange and mutual inspiration. This is what we expect from each other and ask of you. Seize the opportunities our university offers you as an open-minded student eager to acquire new knowledge. We look forward to filling campus with life again, even while some restrictions still apply. Little by little we will achieve a new normal together and emerge from these crises with renewed strength. Everyone has a role to play in this. My request to you today is please get vaccinated, if possible.
A number of advising and orientation offers provided by the central university administration, faculties, and degree programs are in place to help you get acclimated to this new phase. We especially invite you to attend our digital Orientation Week, from 4 to 8 October 2021 under the motto #GuidetoTUBerlin. This event will address questions like: "How do I create my course schedule? Where can I find help? How do I find my way around campus?" Detailed up-to-date information can also be found on our website.
We very much hope you will soon feel "our" TU Berlin is "your" TU Berlin. On behalf of the entire Executive Board, I would like to wish you every success for this new phase in your life and hope that the subject you have chosen to study inspires you to work hard to achieve your goals.
Stay healthy! Sincerely,
Prof. Dr. Christian Thomsen
