Legal Aspects

There are legal requirements in all phases of the research data lifecycle so it is important to establish what they are before the project starts.

The main legal aspects that need to be considered are:

  • Who does the research data collected during the research belong to and who is allowed to use it?
  • How should you handle personal data collected during research?

The German Copyright Act (Urheberrechtsgesetz) and the various data protection laws are the best place to find answers to these questions. This page provides a summary of the most important questions and answers on these two points.
