Funding Acknowledgments and Research Funding

In general, a distinction is made between research funding acknowledgments and publication funding acknowledgments. Both are for the purpose of documenting third-party funding.

Research Funding Acknowledgements

Research funding acknowledgments make clear which funding organization provided financial support for the research process. Such acknowledgments are obligatory for many funding organizations. Funding organizations (in particular the DFG and the EU) often provide specific instructions about the form funding acknowledgments should take.

Funded projects are listed in the Gepris-database.

Information from the DFG Funding Priciples (article 13.1., S. 42):

  • Publications must include a reference to the funding provided by the DFG (funding acknowledgment) in the following form: „Gefördert durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Projectnumber(s)“.
  • In publications in other languages, a translation of DFG should be added: e.g. in English: „funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) – Projectnumber(s)“.
  • The project number can be found on the notice of granting or the GEPRIS project information system.
  • If a publication refers to more than one project, the project numbers must be separated using semicolons.

European Union (EU)

Funded projects are listed in the CORDIS database.

Information from the Horizon 2020 Annotated Model Grant Agreement (AGA H2020,  article 29.4):

  • Unless the [Commission][Agency] requests or agrees otherwise or unless it is impossible, any dissemination of results (in any form, including electronic) must:
    (a) display the EU emblem and
    (b) include the following text: “This project has received funding from the [European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme][Euratom research and training programme 2014-2018] under grant agreement No [Number]”.

Funded projects are listed in the funding catalog of the federal government.

Information from the supplementary provisions for grants (NABF, article 5.2.2):

  • [The grantee shall] include the following notice on the cover page or in another clearly visible place when publishing the result:
"The project on which this report is based was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research under the grant number .... Responsibility for the content of this publication lies with the author.”

Publication Funding Acknowledgements

Publication funding acknowledgments on the other hand make clear which institutions have provided the authors with grants to cover any publication costs. Where Open Access fees are covered by TU Berlin's Publication Fund, you will receive corresponding instructions with the funding approval.
