Financing for Open Access Publications in Journals

Funding conditions

Requirements for articles

  • Articles in Open Access journals with fees not exceeding 2.000 EUR (incl. taxes, equivalent to approx. 1,680 EUR net) are eligible for funding. Please note that the current exchange rate will be applied. Partial funding is not possible.
  • Articles resulting from third-party funded projects, where third-party funding is still available to cover publishing fees, cannot be supported through the central publication fund.
  • Only articles submitted under a Creative-Commons license (preferably CC-BY) are eligible for funding.
  • The article should include an acknowledgement that it was funded by the TU Berlin publication fund when it is published: „We acknowledge support by the German Research Foundation and the Open Access Publication Fund of TU Berlin.“

Requirements for journals

  • Publications are eligible for funding when they are published in Open Access journals that have gone through a quality assurance procedure and are listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
  • Articles in hybrid journals, i.e. subscription-based journals that offer Open Access options per article for a fee (e.g. Elsevier Sponsored Article, Hogrefe OpenMind, ACS AuthorChoice, SAGE Choice etc.) are not eligible for funding.
  • Articles in so-called Mirror Journals, Open Access offshoots to Closed Access journals, are not eligible for funding either, even if they are listed in DOAJ since Mirror Journals are a type of hybrid Open Access. For the definition of mirror journals, see the DOAJ webpage "Guide to applying" (section "Additional criteria for some journal types").

  • An application for funding of publication costs may be submitted when the article is accepted by the publisher. The order of financing is generally decided by the date of submission of the application.
  • You will receive a prompt reply (usually within one week) on whether your article is eligible for funding.
  • The applicant must be the “submitting author” or “corresponding author” responsible for funding and be a member of TU Berlin under § 43 Berliner Hochschulgesetz. Please observe the requirements of the Affiliation Guideline of TU Berlin (in particular the naming of the TU Berlin as the first affiliation and the TU's e-mail address as the contact address).
  • Please provide your ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) along with your application. The TU affiliation of the author must be distinctly identifiable in the publication.
  • Accepted funds are available for a duration of 12 months. If the publication has not been published within this period, a new application for funding must be submitted.
  • The publisher’s invoice must be directed to your institutional adress and include the following information: The VAT ID (Umsatzsteuer-ID-Nr.) of the publisher, the TU Berlin VAT ID (DE 811 231 089) and additionally for foreign invoices the net amount (without VAT / Mehrwertsteuer). Send the original invoice via E-Mail or to the university library at: Universitätsbibliothek der TU Berlin, Abt. Publikationsdienste, Fasanenstraße 88, 10623 Berlin. The university library will execute the payment.
