Homosexuality around 1900

During the time of the German Empire, homosexuality was socially frowned upon. Section 175 of the German Penal Code, introduced in 1871, (re)criminalized sexual acts between men. At the same time, a social movement advocated the liberalization of homosexuality. During this turbulent time, the Danish writer and journalist Herman Bang also lived in Berlin, where he found greater freedom as a homosexual man than in his country of origin.
On the occasion of the exhibition "Herman Bang and his Fasanenstraße island - a Dane in Berlin", we have compiled literature related to gender discourses at the turn of the century. You can find the book display online or on the 3rd floor of the Central Library next to the Information Desk.

Herman Bang

Celebrated as an author and journalist, persecuted as a homosexual: Herman Bang (1857-1912) is today considered one of the most important representatives of literary impressionism. In his native Denmark, he was subjected to ridicule and hostility during his lifetime. He found an artistic exile in liberal Berlin at the turn of the century.
Accompanying the exhibition "Herman Bang and his Fasanenstraße island - a Dane in Berlin", we have compiled literature by and about Herman Bang.

Book Displays On Site

Rocks, minerals, and gems

Many of us have spotted colorful, striking, or shiny stones while out on a walk. Unfortunately, however, we often don’t know exactly what we’re holding.

If you want to be able to identify your findings on your next walk, stop by our book display in the Central Library. The display is currently dedicated to rocks, minerals, and gems. We’ve put together illustrated books and guides as well as books about chemical composition. All displayed books can be loaned with the exception of one book (marked with a red dot on the spine).

Location: Central Library, 2nd floor, on the right next to the information desk
