Program overview

The international master’s program in Energy Management prepares you for a managerial career in the energy sector. The program is a continuing education master’s degree that teaches you the technical, legal, economic, business management, and entrepreneurial aspects of energy management and equips you with the skills required to work in the energy sector. You will acquire knowledge of the technical principles of energy generation, distribution, and use and the economic, ecological and societal conditions in which these occur. The program provides you with a thorough understanding of the general legal conditions of competition and regulatory law as well as the planning, implementation and controlling of integrative management. Key interdisciplinary skills, such as the use of new media and information technologies as well as intercultural dialogue and communication skills, also play a key role in the syllabus.

Admission requirements

The formal admission requirements for the master’s program are a first university degree qualifying a graduate for professional work and subsequent relevant professional experience of, as a rule, not less than one year.

 In the past, the number of applications has exceeded the number of places available (30 per year), and admission is consequently subject to a selection procedure. Selection criteria are as follows:

  • The overall grade achieved in your previous degree
  • If available (not mandatory for the application procedure): test result of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or an alternative evaluation
  • The relevance of the subjects taken on your previous degree program
  • Proof of all relevant professional experience of six months or more gained since graduating from your previous degree program
  • Proven level of English
  • Motivation and reasons for applying to the master’s program and the overall impression created by the application

The program is taught in English and proof of a sufficient level of English is a condition of admission.

Program structure

The continuing education master’s degree in Energy Management begins in the winter semester and lasts for 3 regular semesters (standard period of study). Students studying full time are required to achieve 90 credit points, 72 of which are to be obtained in modules, with a further 18 credit points awarded for the master’s thesis.

Internships

The master’s program does not require students to complete an internship. Students can benefit from a number of excursions as well as the professional and academic experience and networks of their lecturers to develop contacts to companies offering internships, and thus organize their own work experience during their studies (preferably during semester breaks).

Stays abroad

You have the option of organizing your own study-related stay abroad. The program is designed to provide you with an opportunity to do so in the mobility period in either the second or, preferably, third semester, whether you are studying full-time or part-time. Individual guidance is available to help you plan your stay abroad.

Acquired skills

The program teaches the knowledge of engineering, business management, economics, and law required for a holistic understanding of management practice in the energy sector. As a graduate of this program, you have specialist knowledge of the technical principles of energy generation, distribution, and use as well as their economic, ecological and societal contexts, and the general legal framework in which they operate. You also have a thorough understanding of the planning, implementation, and controlling of integrative management as well as the fundamentals of accounting and auditing. You are also well versed in the issues involved in leadership, investment planning, marketing, public relations, financing, and innovation management and possess the interpersonal and intercultural skills required for dialogue and communication as well as the ability to independently use new media and information technologies. The program also provides you with information about and contact to leading companies, regulatory authorities, and research institutes within the energy sector, as well as management skills and ideas for using your social and professional networks.

There is a high demand among businesses in the energy sector for broadly qualified specialists with integrative management and leadership skills and expert knowledge of specific sectors. Excellent career prospects are available to graduates, particularly in leading positions within the energy sector as well as in general middle and senior management positions. Typical employers include consultancies, energy providers, energy service providers and technology companies within the energy sector, commercial operations with high energy requirements, regulatory offices, consumer and environmental protection associations, specialized investment businesses as well as the mobility and transport sector.
