Program overview

Are you looking for a degree whichto combine programming, computer graphics, and virtual worlds with microelectronics, digital technology, and computer networks, as well as the chance to develop new game consoles, cell phones, household appliances, on-board computers, or robot control systems? An understanding of the working environment shows that it is not enough to learn about programming after completing a degree in electrical engineering or to take a course in digital electronics after finishing a degree in computer engineering. This is where the bachelor’s program in Computer Engineering comes in by providing a university education in computer engineering with an introduction to the principles of electrical engineering. The highly interdisciplinary nature of the program equips you with the skills and knowledge you need to make a successful start to your career or further your studies in a master’s program. The core topics of software engineering, computer networking, and electronics enable you to acquire the skills and knowledge to be able to develop sophisticated computer-based systems working as a computer scientist and electrical engineer. You can also choose your own area of specialization from fields such as embedded systems, intelligent networks, or media technology, making this a major component of your studies.

Admission requirements

Admission to every bachelor’s program at TU Berlin requires a university entrance qualification certificate. Generally, the Abitur serves as the university entrance qualification certificate. If you do not have a formal university entrance qualification, you may still be able to study at TU Berlin if you can provide proof of certain professional qualifications.

The Computer Engineering bachelor’s program is taught in German. If you are applying with a foreign school-leaving certificate, you must provide proof of German skills at a specific level. This is a prerequisite for admission. As much of the technical literature in the field is published in English, a good level of English is also desirable.

To succeed in the Computer Engineering program, you will need a strong interest in computer-based devices, programming, and digital technology as well as an aptitude for exploring theoretical-technical problems, mathematics, and physics. Initiative and good self-management skills are also important to meet the demands of studying at university.

Program structure

During the first four semesters of the program you will be addressing the fundamental principles of computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, and mathematics. Building upon this, you will decide from the fourth semester on the area of specialization for the final two semesters, choosing from the areas of media technology, embedded systems, electronics and computer engineering, automation engineering, and computer science. The elective program further allows you to select modules offered by other universities in Berlin and Brandenburg. You can also choose the option of a stay abroad. You will write your bachelor’s thesis at the end of the program. The Bachelor of Science qualification is an internationally recognized degree qualifying you to work in your profession.

A proposed course schedule is available to help you plan your studies. This shows you which modules need to be completed in which semesters to enable you to complete your degree within the standard period of study. The schedule is intended as a guideline and is not mandatory. You can find the proposed course schedule in the study and examination regulations. Content and modules

The program is divided into individual modules, usually consisting of several thematically linked courses. Modules often include a variety of different study and teaching formats, such as lectures, practical tutorials, seminars, and practical projects. The scope of a module is expressed in credit points (LP), reflecting the amount of time students are required to invest in order to successfully complete the module. One credit point corresponds to 30 hours. A module can be spread over a maximum of two semesters. As a rule, it is necessary to pass an examination or an assessed assignment to successfully complete a module.

A current overview of all modules is available in TU Berlin’s module transfer system (MTS). The module catalogue shows which courses are mandatory and which elective. Detailed module descriptions provide information on the content, learning outcomes, participation requirements, workload, assessment methods, and much more.

You are not formally required to do an internship either before or during the Computer Engineering bachelor’s program, but we strongly recommend you do so. An internship provides you with an initial insight into future career areas and enables you to develop networks with potential employers.

Stays abroad

You can generally complete parts of the program abroad, either in the form of a semester abroad or internships. You are, however, not required to complete a stay abroad.

Acquired skills

The aim of the bachelor’s program in Computer Engineering is to prepare you to be a farsighted engineer working at the exciting interface between software development and electronics. You have a firm grasp of the most important technical principles and methods of computer engineering and are able to apply these in practice. Your professional career will focus on developing hardware and software systems. However, you also acquire knowledge and skills beyond these technical fields: The program further teaches you to work independently and responsibly, to be a good team player, to be able to think abstractly and creatively, and to present your findings effectively. These skills are just as important for your future work in developing solutions to problems.

After successful completion of the program, you will receive the internationally recognized academic degree "Bachelor of Science" (B. Sc.).

After your studies

Your career prospects as a computer engineer are excellent. The combination of computer science and electrical engineering is rich in synergy potential and permeates our entire living environment, providing graduates with an exciting array of career options. You have the opportunity to develop new device systems as well as control and user programs for a variety of areas - from the automobile industry to the entertainment industry - or you can pursue a career in consulting.

Another tipp: you could start your own business. Berlin is currently home to the most vibrant start-up scene in Europe. There are a number of institutes and facilities within the University offering you the chance to get some inspiration and to support you with setting up your own business. These include the award winning Career Service and the Centre for Entrpreneurship (CfE). The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science additionally has its own representative for business start ups to provide you with practical advice and to put you in touch with a valuable network.
