Biological Chemistry, M.Sc.

Program overview

The master’s program in Biological Chemistry at Technische Universität Berlin is unique within the Berlin/Brandenburg science region. The interdisciplinary course of study is offered by the Institute of Chemistry and Institute of Biotechnology and offers students a broad spectrum of teaching and research in biological chemistry, biotechnology, biophysical chemistry, microbiology, and structural biology.

The focus of the degree program is on providing students with an interdisciplinary education with biochemical-biological and molecular-based chemical content as well as the related experimental expertise. Current biotechnological and biochemical issues and applications, consistently updated with the latest research findings, play an important role in this study program. Students can choose from a range of specializations in this study program. Depending on the specialization chosen, students may study the following: biological chemistry/biocatalysis and synthetic biology, applied and molecular microbiology, biophysical chemistry, bioanalytics, medical biotechnology, or applied biochemistry.

Note: Please find the rules for admission under the link for "Study and examination regulations" below.

Admission requirements

As for every other master’s degree program at TU Berlin, applicants must possess a first university degree qualifying them for professional work. This degree must be in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, molecular life science, or a similar study program. More detailed information can be found in the application and admission regulations of the study program.

The Biological Chemistry master’s program is taught in German. If you are applying with a foreign school-leaving certificate, you must provide proof of German skills at a specific level. This is a prerequisite for admission. As some courses are offered in English, a knowledge of English is useful. However, it is not a condition for admission to studies.

Program structure

There is a proposed course schedule for the degree program. This is a recommendation for how to complete the degree program within the standard period of study of four semesters. It provides an example of which modules to take in which semesters. While this proposed course schedule is ideal on paper, it is not mandatory. It’s simply an example of how to successfully schedule and shape your studies. You can find the proposed course schedule in the study and examination regulations.

The latest version of these regulations always applies to university applicants.

Content and modules

The master’s degree program Biological Chemistry consists of modules which combine curriculum content on a specific topic and often include various study and teaching formats. You can find a module list which offers a current overview of all the modules in TU Berlin’s module transfer system (MTS). In the MTS you have an overview of which modules are mandatory for your degree program and which are elective. Detailed module descriptions provide information about the content, learning objectives, participation requirements, workload, type of assessment, and much more. The module list is based on the study and exam regulations.

Internships

The curriculum requires the completion of various laboratories/practical courses ((Labor)praktika). However, a non-university internship (work experience placement) is not required. Further information is available in the study and examination regulations.

Stays abroad

The proposed course structure offers the opportunity to complete a study-related stay abroad within the standard period of study. The Faculty has staff to assist you with selecting a university and putting together a schedule. You can obtain general information about stays abroad from the TU Berlin International Office (study abroad) and Career Service (internships abroad).

Acquired skills

As a graduate of this master’s program you have a thorough molecular understanding of material structure and reactivity and are able to practically implement biochemical issues making use of approaches from natural science/engineering as well as the necessary expertise in technology and equipment. You also possess thorough knowledge from the fields of biological chemistry, structural biology, microbiology, and cellular biology. This knowledge is supplemented by skills in your chosen specializations (biophysical chemistry/theoretical chemistry, biological chemistry/organic chemistry or biotechnology).

In order to meet the demands of responsible research and the development of biologically inspired strategies, the study program also equips you with knowledge about chemical relationships and reactions in a biological context as well as methodological and technological skills. Your technical knowledge and breadth of methodological skills enable you to independently plan and organize experimental and theoretical work, critically view and discuss scientific content, and conduct interdisciplinary work.

After your studies

The master’s program’s strong interdisciplinary orientation enables you to work in a wide range of fields. Graduates often have management responsibilities while also developing, researching, advising, planning, or supervising work in industry, public authorities, or other institutions.

Additionally, your degree qualifies you to pursue a doctorate. This qualifies you for further professional opportunities. Doctoral graduates are highly sought after in the chemical industry and in small and mid-sized biotech companies.
