Language skills

  • To apply, you require German language skills at a certain level, demonstrated by a language certificate.
  • The final language certificate must always be submitted. A temporarily issued language certificate, registration for a language course or a certificate of attendance are not sufficient.
  • If the language certificate consists of a front and back page or several pages, all pages must be submitted.
  • PLEASE NOTE: The following languages requirements are still valid and must be fulfilled. Principally, divergences are not possible. Incomplete applications or applications that have not been submitted in due form by the end of the application period cannot be considered and will be rejected.

Preparatory School and precourse (Applicant groups A and B)

Application to Preparatory School/precourse

Recognized proofs of German language skills:

  • Certificate at B2 level or higher of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • DSH-1 recognized by the Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (You can find the list of recognized DSH examinations on the following web page).
  • TestDaF with TDN 3 or higher in all modules
  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz - Level 1 (DSD I) - regardless of partial results
  • OnDaF B2 / OnSET-Deutsch
  • Certificate from the Goethe-Institut confirming participation in a C1 course
  • German as a 1st or 2nd foreign language on school-leaving certificate
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma): German language A at Standard Level or Higher Level or German language B at Higher Level
  • Realschulabschluss/Mittlerer Schulabschluss (MSA) according to the German education system

PLEASE NOTE: Nationals of Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland also need a language certificate at the required level. A copy of your identity card or passport is NOT sufficient proof of language skills!

External assessment test

Recognized proofs of German language skills:

  • Certificate at C1 level or higher of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • DSH-1 recognized by the Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (You can find the list of recognized DSH examinations on the following web page).
  • TestDaF with at least 16 points (TDN 3 or higher)
  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz - Level 1 (DSD I) - regardless of partial results
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma): German Language A or B at Higher Level
  • Realschulabschluss/Mittlerer Schulabschluss (MSA) according to the German education system

Supplementary examination

Recognized proof of German language skills:

Proof of passing the German language section of an assessment test at a German preparatory school (with at least grade 4.0)

Please note: If you were exempt from taking the German language section of the assessment test because you acquired other proof of your German language skills (for example DSH-2 or TestDaF 4-4-4-4), you must also submit this proof.

Undergraduate programs (Applicant groups C, D, E, Z)

Recognized proof of German language skills

TU Berlin recognizes ONLY the following as proof of German language skills for admission:

  • Applicants with German, Austrian or Swiss citizenship (Switzerland: only German-speaking region) must only provide a copy of their passports. Further proof of German language skills is not required.
  • DSH-2 or DSH-3 officially recognized by the German Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (You can find the list of recognized DSH examinations on the following web page).
  • Final TestDaF certificate with TDN 4 or higher in all modules (4-4-4-4)
    • Exception for the winter semester 2020/21: To recognize a TestDaF examination as proof of language proficiency, you must have taken the TestDaF examination on June 30, 2020 at the latest. In case you you took the TestDaF examination on June 30, 2020 and you will not receive your TestDaF certificate in due time, then please upload instead your confirmation of registration for this TestDaF examination by the end of the respective application deadline. The confirmation of registration must contain the examination date as well as your TestDaF-registration number. Before the end of the respective application deadline you must actively contact uni-assist and inform uni-assist about the publication of your TestDaF results. Uni-assist will check if you have reached the required level of the TestDaF. ATTENTION: Unfortunately, participation at a later date cannot be taken into account, because the results will not be published in time by the TestDaF Institute.
  •  Proof of passing the German language section of an assessment test at a preparatory school in Germany (with at least grade 4.0)
    • Please note: If you were exempt from taking the German language section of the assessment test because you acquired other proof of your German language skills (for example DSH-2 or TestDaF 4-4-4-4), you must also submit this proof.
  • "Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz - Level II" (DSD II) - independent from partial results (front and back page)
  • "Deutsche Sprachprüfung II" (DS-II) of the Sprachen- und Dolmetscher-Institut München
  • "Goethe-Zertifikat C2: großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom"
  • "telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule"
  • Proof of a study qualification acquired at a German-speaking institution (For example: German Abitur, university degree taught in German. If German is not clearly recognizable as the language of instruction, additional proof of this must be provided.)
  • Completed vocational training in Germany

If you can provide a secondary school-leaving certificate listed in the current KMK resolution "Zugang von ausländischen Studienbewerberinnen und Studienbewerbern mit ausländischem Bildungsnachweis zum Studium an deutschen Hochschulen: Nachweis von Sprachkenntnissen", further proof of German language skills is not required:

  • German certificate in the French Diplôme du Baccalauréat obtained after attending a bilingual French-German branch of a secondary school (agreement of 10.7.1980 between the the Federal Republic of Germany and France)
  • French Diplôme du Baccalauréat with the option “internationale” of the German departments (agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and France on the simultaneous acquisition of the German general university entrance qualification and the French baccalauréat of 13 May 1994)
  • European Baccalaureate from a European School, provided that an examination in German as a first language (L1) or second language (L2) has been successfully completed ("Convention defining the Statute of the European Schools" of 17.08.1994, "Regulations for the European Baccalaureate", ref: 2014-11-D-11-en-3, and "Arrangements for Implementing the Regulations for the European Baccalaureate", ref: 2015-05-D-12-en-6, as amended)
  • US Advanced Placement exam (AP exam) in German (KMK resolution of 10./11.09.1992)
  • School-leaving certificate of upper level secondary education from the German-speaking community of the Kingdom of Belgium
  • Secondary-school leaving certificate from the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
  • School-leaving certificate issued by secondary schools (Reifediplom) with German as language of instruction in the autonomous province of Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy
  • School-leaving certificate of the German language international section at the Liceo Ginnasio “Luigi Galvani” in Bologna, Italy (KMK resolution of 06.03.2002).
  • School-leaving certificate of the German language international section at the Liceo Gimnasio Statale “M. Gioia” in Piacenza, Italy (KMK resolution of 27.09.2005)
  • School-leaving certificate of the German language international section at the “Educandato Statale Collegio Uccelis” in Udine, Italy (KMK resolution of 28.03.2006)
  • German-Irish bilingual secondary school-leaving certificate issued by St. Kilian’s German School, Ireland (agreement of 29.05.2006)
  • School-leaving certificate of the bilingual branches at the Liceo Ginnasio Statale “Romagnosi” in Parma and at the Liceo Classico Statale Socrate in Bari, Italy (KMK resolution of 11.12.2007)
  • School-leaving certificate of the German language international section at the Scuola Internazionale Europea “A. Spinelli” in Turin, Italy (KMK resolution of 17.03.2010)
  • School-leaving certificate of the German language international section at the Liceo Classico “Guiseppe Garibaldi” in Naples, Italy (KMK resolution of 10./11.12.2013)
  • School-leaving certificate of the German language international section at the Liceo Classico Statale “Umberto I” in Palermo, Italy (KMK resolution of 23./24.03.2016)
  • The Polish matura examination in the subject of German from general secondary schools qualifying for university entrance (Lyzeen) with bilingual branch with the subject German as second language of instruction ("Joint Declaration of Intent on the Recognition of the Polish Matura Examination in German as a Second Language of Instruction taken by Graduates of Bilingual Education at General Lyceums with German as a Second Language of Instruction as a Language Certificate for Admission to Higher Education in Germany between the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Poland and the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany" of 27.08.2009 and the KMK resolution of 17.09.2008.)
  • School-leaving certificates from foreign schools taught in German culminating in the bilingual International Baccalaureate Diploma (“Bilingual International Baccalaureate Diploma from Foreign Schools with Subjects Taught in German”, resolution of the KMK of 26.05.2002 in the version of 26.09.2019)

Non-recognized proof of German language skills

The following documents are NOT accepted by TU Berlin as proof of language skills:

  • Certificates with the remark “Oberstufe” (corresponding to Level C1 (DSH2) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), issued, for example, by the Hartnackschule
  • Degree in “Germanistik “ (German language and literature) from a foreign university
  • International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma): “IB German as language A or B at Standard Level or Higher Level”
  • Subject "German" on a secondary school-leaving certificate (for exceptions see: KMK resolution of 26.09.2019)
  • DSH examinations that are not officially recognized by the German Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (You can find the list of recognized DSH examinations on the following web page).
  • Periods of study or academic and examination achievements at German universities
    (Exception: a German university degree taught in German is accepted as proof of German language skills)
  • "Realschulabschluss/Mittlerer Schulabschluss (MSA)" according to the German education system
  • "Zeugnis DAF" from the Dolmetscher Institut Münster
  • "ÖSD-Prüfung C2 Wirtschaftssprache Deutsch"
