Learning outcomes

As a prerequisite for in-depth study, students will gain access to model setup and modern numerical methods based on the variational principles of mechanics. Students are enabled to model and analyze complicated mechanical systems with efficient methods.

Course contents

The principle of virtual work, d'Alembert's principle in Lagrange's version, Lagrange's equations of 1st and 2nd kind, the principle of least action, Rayleigh-Ritz's method, Castigliano's method, Hamilton's principle, elastic potential, basics of deriving FEM from energy methods.
