New Office and Honorary Position for Professor Helmut Schwarz

Professor Dr. Drs. h.c. Helmut Schwarz can now add a new honorary title as well as a new office to his growing list of distinctions. On 11 May 2022, the Julius-Maximilians-Universität of Würzburg awarded the title of “Honorary Senator Alma Julia” at a ceremony marking the anniversary of its founding in recognition of his outstanding work for the university. This includes serving as chair of the University Council from 2019 until 2021.

A few days earlier, on 8 May, he was appointed a member of the Brandenburg State University Council by minister for science, research and culture Dr. Manja Schüle. The council advises the state government on strategic issues regarding higher education planning. Further tasks include advising the presidents and bodies of the various universities on key issues. It is also involved in making decisions regarding the development plans of the universities and delegates members to the finding committee on elections for university presidents.

Helmut Schwarz, who is a molecular chemist, was professor of organic chemistry at TU Berlin from 1983 until 2022. He was president of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation from 2008 until 2018; member of the Presidium of the Leopoldina National Academy of Sciences from 2010-2015, and vice president of the German Research Foundation from 2001 until 2007. In addition to the many offices he has held, Professor Schwarz has also been awarded a number of prizes and awards, including nine honorary doctorates, reflecting his exceptional scientific expertise.
