Professor Martin Oestreich of TU Berlin’s Institute of Chemistry has been awarded the Wacker Silicon Award 2021 for his pioneering studies in the area of organic and semi-organic chemistry. In a statement, the chemical concern WACKER praised Oestreich for advancing the development of new catalysts through his work combining boron and silicon with organic molecules. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 10,000-euro award will be presented at an online ceremony on 7 July 2021.
Martin Oestreich has held the Einstein Professorship for Organic Chemistry at Technische Universität Berlin, part of the UniSysCat (Unifying Systems in Catalysis) Cluster of Excellence, since 2011. His focus on synthesis and catalysis lies at the intersection of materials and life sciences.
Oestreich becomes the 21st winner of the Wacker Silicon Award and the second from TU Berlin following the chemist Professor Matthias Driess in 2011.
