4 May 2022, 9:00 to 14:00 - Free distribution of open source tomato plants

Did you know that TU Berlin cultivates its own tomato – the TUmate 🍅? What makes our tomatoes special is their open source seed license.  As a common good, our seeds are legally protected from patents and other forms of privatization. So, under certain conditions, every gardener can grow the TUmate.

Throughout March and April, the Chair of Vegetation Technique and Planting Design at TU Berlin was busy growing 900 seedlings in fields and greenhouses, which it will be distributing together with the Office of Communication, Events and Alumni. If you want to harvest your own delicious red tomatoes this summer, come by and pick up a plant. First come, first served! Please remember to bring a suitable container to take your plant home.

When and where?

  • Please note: Due to very high demand, all plants have been distributed already!

And if all this talk of tomatoes has you yearning for a TUmate salad, TUmate with Mozarella, or pasta with a TUmate source, then check out the delicious offers available from the studierendenWERK Berlin food truck this coming Wednesday. We will also be providing a photobooth so you can take a picture of yourself and your new TUmate plant as a momento.

TUmate is also a community project and an opportunity to explore your own gardening skills, so please feel free to share your experiences of growing, harvesting and perhaps even breeding your own varieties at socialmedia(at)tu-berlin.de and/or #TUBerlin as well as #TUmateBerlin

By the way: If the weather puts a dampener on things, we will switch from the forecourt to the coatroom opposite the Audimax in the Main Building.
