Project description:

The dm-drogerie markt GmbH + Co. KG established the initiative KLIMA BEWUSSTER HANDELN (free translation: CLIMATE CONSCIOUS ACTION) to develop environmentally-neutralized products for everyday needs - with the smallest possible ecological footprint. Several life cycle analysis case studies of a wide variety of dm products are carried out by the Technical University of Berlin in cooperation with the manufacturing partners of the dm brands. The products are assessed over all life cycle phases from production to their use and final disposal to identify ecological hotspots and define optimization measures. Raw materials and energy resources, as well as associated emissions, are recorded. It is then assessed where, e.g., the most significant CO2 emissions and other environmental impacts such as nitrogen oxide emissions or water pollution can be reduced or completely avoided. Environmental impacts that cannot be avoided will be compensated under the causation principle in the impact categories of climate change, eutrophication, acidification, summer smog, and ozone depletion. To this end, compensation measures and projects will start where it makes sense to restore the ecological balance. As part of the project, the HeimatERBE compensation company transforms degraded industrial sites in Germany into valuable biotopes to support biodiversity and manage climate impacts.
