Sustainable Engineering

dm project - climate-neutralized products (KLIMA BEWUSSTER HANDELN initiative)

Project description

The drugstore chain dm-drogerie markt GmbH + Co. KG works with the KLIMA BEWUSSTER HANDELN initiative on the development of climate-neutralized products for everyday use. In the course of the project, a wide variety of products from the dm range of goods are subjected to a life cycle assessment by TU Berlin in cooperation with the manufacturing partners of the dm brands. The entire life cycle of each product is assessed to identify critical points and develop optimization measures. All consumed raw materials and energy resources, including emissions, are recorded. We then check where the most carbon emissions, or other emissions such as nitrogen oxide or water pollution, can be reduced or avoided. We also check where processes, materials and logistics can be altered to effectively reduce environmental impacts. Unavoidable environmental impacts are allocated according to the polluter pays principle. Compensation measures and projects start at those points where it makes sense to restore the ecological balance.

The specific goals of the Chair of Sustainable Engineering are:
