The project Bahnkreis (orbit) has set the challenging task of holistically optimizing the life cycle of rail vehicles for ecological and economic targets. It includes the following sub-goals:
- Bringing together all partners involved in the life cycle of rail vehicles
- The main goal of the project is the development and validation of an instrument for the economic and ecological optimization of rail vehicles and their components. The methodological basis for this are both the life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC). This instrument will be validated for two exemplary selected rail vehicles, the 420 series (commuter train, used in Frankfurt area, among others) by Siemens AG and double-decker cars by Bombardier Transportation, as well as for two example assemblies, the double-deck floor and the traction motor of the ET 420 .
- Creation of requirement catalogs for rail vehicles from the point of view of the various parties involved in the life cycle of rail vehicles
