In the area of telematics and maintenance, the Chair of Rail Vehicles focuses on the development of telematics and sensor systems as part of the research projects for the digitization of rail freight traffic and for the monitoring and analysis of condition-based maintenance and for freight cars. The relevant measurement data, such as temperature, humidity and internal pressure for tank cars or accelerations in three spatial directions from the car body, can be recorded and evaluated with numerous sensors. The collected sensor data can be used to plan predictive maintenance activities in advance. In summary, the focus is on the following topics:
Analysis of required sensor technology
Diagnostics, evaluation and modeling
Implementation of the GPS system in freight cars
Automation in freight traffic
Wireless monitoring and control via GSM
