It is possible to apply for additional professorships from some funding organizations, generally for the purposes of research. Following the period of third-party funding, financing for these professorships must then generally be provided from the budget of the institution itself.
- Alexander von Humboldt Professorhips (funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation - AvH)
- Lichtenberg Endowed Professorships (funded by the Volkswagen Foundation)
- Heisenberg Professorships (funded by the German Research Foundation - DFG)
- Einstein Professorships (funded by the Einstein Foundation Berlin - ESB)
