Carolin Stellmacher - Perceiving virtual object weight in VR through touch and vision

The recent growth of virtual reality (VR) has led to increased attention on consumer VR systems, however, the development of haptic feedback for simulating virtual object weight is still lagging.
Existing VR controllers rely on limited vibrotactile feedback and prior research prototypes involve complex hardware.

In my talk, I will present two novel techniques for weight rendering in VR, using existing components in consumer VR systems: adaptive trigger resistance and manipulation of the control-display ratio. It explores the integration of hardware-based and software-based methods to improve the perception of weight in VR. I will examine the perceptual benefits of providing users with multi-modal weight cues at different stages of interaction and its significance in VR.
