Evaluation Criteria for the Professorship Building Physics

The evaluation criteria listed below under I. are directly binding for all tenure track professorships at TU Berlin (Section 3 (2) Tenure Track Regulations of TU Berlin).

The recommended additional evaluation criteria under II. reflect the culture of the specific discipline and the focus of the professorship (Section 3 (3) and (4) Tenure Track Regulations of TU Berlin). These criteria will be amended during appointment negotiations to reflect the appointee’s profile and background (Section 3 (6) Tenure Track Regulations of TU Berlin).

I. Criteria which apply across the University

Research

  • The originality and/or academic breadth and/or depth of the work undertaken
  • Significant contributions to publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or monographs as well as in collected works published by recognized publishers (including in electronic format)
  • Contributions to conferences (e.g. talks, papers)
  • Potential for academic development in international comparison
  • Third-party funding acquired

Teaching

  • Devising and teaching of different types of courses at different levels (bachelor´s, master´s, etc.)
  • Quality of teaching (e.g. based on an evaluation)
  • Supervision of theses

Advancement of junior scholars

  • Supervision of the academic advancement and further qualification of research associates and teaching and research assistants
  • Supervision of at least one doctoral candidate
  • Providing evaluations for doctoral procedures

Involvement in academic self-management

Within Technische Universität Berlin

  • Participating in committees or assuming offices and/or functions

Outside Technische Universität Berlin

  • Participating in committees
  • Writing evaluations

Supporting knowledge transfer

  • Contributions to science communication

Language skills

  • Acquiring German language skills to the required level (proven by an official certificate of level from a recognized language school or institute)

II. Proposed additional criteria

Research

In implementation and specification of the five criteria in the category “Research” which apply across the university:

Developing national and international reputation in more than one field of engineering sciences as demonstrated by:

  • Acceptance of articles with substantial personal contribution and an original approach in more than one area of engineering sciences for publication in academic journals with international reach and peer-review procedure
  • Acceptance of contributions with substantial personal contribution and an original approach in more than one area of engineering sciences for international conferences with peer-review procedure (for each publication and talk)
  • Application for a DFG grant covering at least one research associate position for a doctoral degree for three years and a further application for third-party funding of at least the same scope. The applications must relate to more than one area of engineering science and at least one must be approved

Teaching

As part of the university-wide criterion “Devising and teaching of different types of courses at different levels (bachelor’s, master’s, etc.)” also:

  • Teaching courses in German and English
  • Using different teaching concepts, e. g. inverted classroom, blended learning or project-based learning
  • Further development of teaching content in the master’s program Civil Engineering, taking account of relevant areas of research

Involvement in academic self-management

As part of the university-wide criterion “Writing evaluations” also:

  • Participation in peer-review procedures
  • Evaluating funding applications for external institutions

Additionally:

  • Measures to support the diversity strategy of Technische Universität Berlin in the area of gender and one other area

or

  • Measures to support the internationalization strategy of Technische Universität Berlin

Supporting knowledge transfer

  • Transfer activities in industry (e.g. scientific services, consulting, membership of advisory boards)

or

  • Contributions to open data

or

  • Active involvement in developing codes for software (e.g. open source or public domain software projects)

or

  • Active involvement in developing patents or spin-offs

or

  • Active involvement in professional associations

Leadership

  • Effective use of different leadership instruments
  • Participation in a certified continuing education to strengthen the skills required to lead a working group at W3 level
