Physics Student Counselling

Frequently asked questions about starting your studies

Is a preparatory mathematics course offered?

The TU Berlin offers several online preparatory courses and also a face-to-face preparatory course for mathematics in the winter term.
The Early Bird offer is intended for engineering students and does not meet the mathematics requirements for a physics course, the same applies to the physics preliminary course.

More information is available on the page  at the start of your studies.

Is a preparatory course in physics offered?

No, there is no such offer for physics students. We do not recommend the online preliminary physics course at the TU Berlin for engineering students.

Do I have to register for courses before I start my studies?

Registration for the project laboratory takes place in the first week of terms. For all other courses in the Physics Bachelor of Science course, it is sufficient to appear at the first lecture date and register for the associated tutorial in MOSES. Further necessary registrations, e.g. in SAP for the beginner lab courses, will be announced in the course of the respective courses.

When does the introductory event for freshmen take place?

The introductory event usually takes place on the first day of term or before the first week of terms of each semester. Details on the place and time will be announced in the course catalog and on our website. You will also receive a letter about the location and time of the introductory physics event shortly before the lecture begins.

New students are strongly recommended to be present there, as all relevant information, dates and deadlines will be given in the introductory event. In addition, the various beginner internships and electives are presented by the respective lecturers.

When do I have to choose between basic lab course and project laboratory?

Usually, the registration for the lab courses takes place on Tuesday in the first week of lectures, so that after the presentation of the two types in the introductory event, new students still have some time to make the decision.

The exact dates can be found on the Basic Internship or Project Laboratories.

Which courses can I take in my free elective area (BSc)?

In the free elective area, you can choose freely from the modules offered by the Berlin universities.
Important, only one entire module can be taken at a time. A module cannot be broken down into its individual components.

Is it better to start your studies in the winter or summer semester?

The courses are designed for the beginning of the course in the winter semester. However, it is still possible to start in the summer semester. Specific problems can arise, which the Physics student counselling will be happy to help with.

Since the individual requirements of the student play a major role, we recommend that those who want to start their studies in the summer semester visit our office hours.
