Technische Universität Berlin mourns the death of Professor Dr. Gebhard von Oppen, who researched and taught at the Institute of Optics and Atomic Physics for many years.
Gebhard von Oppen was born in Eberswalde on August 10, 1938. He studied physics at the Universities of Hamburg and Heidelberg, where he graduated under Hans Kopfermann in 1962. From 1964-1970 he was a research assistant at the TU Berlin, where he received his Ph.D. in 1967 under Hans Bucka on the topic of "Experimente zur Untersuchung metastabiler Terme im BaI-Spektrum unter Verwendung von Level-Crossing-Technik und Hochfrequenzspektroskopie". From 1970-2005 he held a professorship in experimental physics at the TU Berlin.
As a university teacher and researcher, Professor von Oppen was mainly concerned with the fundamentals of quantum physics, atomic collision processes and high-resolution atomic spectroscopy. For many years he held the physics lecture for engineers and after the retirement of Professor Bucka the lecture "Atomkerne und Elementarteilchen". After his retirement, he was an honorary member of the project „Zauberhafte Physik“ of the Bürgerstiftung Berlin where he inspired many Berlin elementary school children with his experiments on scientific phenomena. Professor von Oppen passed away on June 8, 2023 in Eberswalde.
To the obituary of the Physics Institutes.
