Our longstanding colleague and friend
Priv.-Doz. Dr. Frank H. Lutz (1968 - 2023)
passed away completely unexpectedly on 10 November 2023.
After studying mathematics in Tübingen and London, Frank Lutz received his doctorate from TU Berlin in 1999. For his dissertation "Triangulated Manifolds with Few Vertices and Vertex-Transitive Group Actions" he received the Richard-Rado-Prize of the Discrete Mathematics Section of the German Mathematical Society (DMV) the following year. He habilitated at the TU Berlin in 2005 on the subject of "Constructive, Enumerative, and Randomised Methods in Computational Topology". After working in Berkeley, Dortmund, Cottbus and Copenhagen, Frank Lutz returned to TU Berlin in 2014. As a lecturer, he was passionately committed to the lecture series "Computer-Oriented Mathematics", always with an open ear for the students. He dedicated his research to combinatorial topology and its applications. As part of the MATH+ Cluster of Excellence, he led the project "The Structure within Disordered Cellular Materials".
In Frank Lutz, we have lost a passionate teacher, a highly motivated researcher, a caring person and, for many of us - a very good friend.
A book of condolences will be available in the Mathematics Library (1st floor of the Mathematics Building, room MA 163) until mid-December. All those who wish to do so are welcome to sign it.
Our thoughts are with his family.
