Future Trends in Food Logistics - Challenges and Impulses for Solutions

Volatile demand behaviour, increasing delivery frequencies, growing product range widths and scarce logistics and sales space in urban conurbations have been shaping food logistics for years. In the course of digitalisation and changing customer needs, logistics is facing additional challenges, most of which have not yet been solved. In addition, new market participants and business models are emerging at a rapid pace to compete with established players in the market. The aim of this study is to identify future trends in food logistics and to point out potential solutions. Based on an online survey with 100 participants and 15 expert interviews, current consumer trends and their influence on food logistics are evaluated (e.g. e-commerce, seasonal and regional food, food waste awareness). Based on this, recommendations for action are given for the future orientation of the logistics of food manufacturers, retailers and logistics service providers. Finally, the study gives an outlook on food logistics solutions in the city of tomorrow.
