Security in Global Supply Chains

Global networking has become a reality in supply chains. Threat scenarios have changed; the demand for security has to meet these. Supply chain security in the sense of attack security refers to threats that affect the supply chain with intended harmful effects, including organized crime and international terrorism. Security in the sense of operational security (safety) is not a primary focus of consideration. In addition to basic technologies such as RFID and GPS, smart containers, which detect deviations - and thus also potential threats - through the use of sensor technology and forward them to a central location via a communication link, are of particular importance for security. As an extension of conventional pin seals, electronic seals are carriers of information (seal number, status, etc.). If necessary, they are capable of registering and storing events (e.g. interruption). For security management in supply chains, it is important to take a view that also considers the weakest link in the chain and is oriented to a comprehensive security strategy. At the same time, all levels of management in different phases (including prevention and reaction) must be filled in for specific objects of observation (processes, resources, organization). Weaknesses can be identified via scenario analyses. In addition to EU regulations, several standards have been set for security in global supply chains (e.g. ISO/PAS 28000) and Initiatives have been founded, including CSI, C-TPAT and TAPA. The Competence Center addresses the characteristics of these security regimes and their impact on global business operations. Recent discussions on the status of the authorized economic operator also fall within this topic area.
