fields of research

Wolfgang H. Müller is W3-Professor of Continuum Mechanics and Constitutive Theory at the Technical University of Berlin. His research is based in the field of theoretical engineering and materials science. More specifically, he is actively engaged in:

  • continuum theory and modeling of the performance and behavior of advanced materials and technical structures
  • fracture and damage mechanics, in particular "fracture electronics"
  • numerical mathematics and computer simulations
  • mechanics and thermodynamics of advanced materials (composites, ceramics, glasses, solders, steels, and alloys)
  • experimental determination of micro-mechanics parameters
  • thermodynamics and constitutive theory

His work received several awards from SMTA, CNRS, and the Senate of Berlin.

Prof Müller graduated with a Diploma in Physics in 1982 and with a PhD in Physical Engineering Science in 1986, both from the Technische Universität in Berlin. In 1997 he finished his habilitation work at the Universität Paderborn and was awarded the Venia Legendi in Technical Mechanics.
He has worked for industry as well as in academia for more than ten years:


  • 1986-88: Development Engineer with Siemens in Munich
  • 1988-89: Researcher at the Hermann-Föttinger Institut in Berlin
  • 1990-91: Scholar and Guest Researcher in Stanford and at UC Santa Barbara
  • 1991-93: Senior Engineer with Failure Analysis Associates, Inc. in San Francisco
  • 1993-98: Senior Lecturer for Structural Mechanics at the Universität Paderborn/Germany
  • 1998-01: Reader/Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Department of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering of Heriot-Watt University/Edinburgh-U.K.

His work has been funded by NASA, EPRI, DFG, and EPSRC. He is a member of ASME, ASTM, DHV, GAMM and STMA.
