Art history has existed at the Technische Universität Berlin or its predecessor institutions, the Bauakademie and the Technische Hochschule Charlottenburg, for 150 years, longer than at any other Berlin university. The first chair was established for the art historical education of architects and engineers. Today, the subject is located at the Institute for Art History and Historical Urban Studies of Faculty I - Humanities and Educational Sciences.

In 2012, a junior professorship for "Art History of East Central Europe with a Focus on the Regions of Common Cultural Heritage" was established with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. It was continued as a visiting professorship between 2016 and 2018. With the appointment of Maria Deiters as honorary professor in 2019, research on historical cultural spaces that we share with our neighboring countries in the East has been anchored at the Institute for the long term.
