Stefan Tai is Full Professor and Head of Chair Information Systems Engineering at TU Berlin, Germany (2014-present). Prior to that, he was a Full Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany (2007-2014) and a Research Staff Member at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York, USA (1999-2007). He also held concurrent posts as Director of research labs, including the FZI Forschungszentrum Informatik in Karlsruhe and Berlin, Germany.
Stefan is a computer scientist specializing in creating next-generation distributed software systems and solutions that provide a necessary foundation to address larger societal challenges. His research interests lie at the intersection of distributed systems, decentralized systems, and software systems engineering. Most notably, Stefan has made contributions to the fields of cloud service engineering and scalable and privacy-preserving blockchain systems. He has published over 150 research papers, served as editor for six scientific journals and on the technical program committees of >200 major and focused conferences worldwide. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1999 from TU Berlin, Germany.
Stefan has over 25 years of experience in cutting-edge IT research and development, with a track record of innovation and technology transfer. He has been a Principal Investigator in numerous, both scientific and industrial projects, with continuous research grants received in the amount of 1 Mio. Euro/year on average. Stefan has been an advisor and mentor to several startups and currently serves on the university advisory board of adesso AG (since 2016) and as Vice Chairman of the supervisory board of conemis AG (since 2018).
