Virtual International Teaching/COIL

What is COIL?

COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) is an accessible and flexible approach to implementing virtual international teaching and learning offers without administrative hurdles, thus promoting the goal of “internationalization at home.” COIL is characterized by virtual collaboration between lecturers across universities, and in particular between international student teams, who work on a joint project. This virtual collaboration in groups from different countries and cultures fosters students’ and instructors’ acquisition and development of digital methodological and intercultural skills.

COIL formats are usually being integrated into already existing courses, providing a supplemental international component. They are flexible and may be limited to a single meeting or last for an entire semester. The respective home university is responsible for awarding ECTS points for the course and recognizing academic performance.

Advantages of COIL

  • COIL makes an important contribution to internationalization at home:
    - It is an innovative and inclusive supplement to classic exchange formats. COIL courses allow students who are not mobile and unable to take part in physical exchange formats to gain intercultural experiences and network at international level.
    - Integrating international students into existing courses provides new, global perspectives.

  • Students and instructors strengthen their intercultural skills and expand their international network.

  • Instructors can make use of the "global classroom," design courses with more variety, and expand their teaching competences to include international components.

  • Students and instructors expand their digital and methodological skills and gain experience using digital tools and collaboration platforms, a key skill in today’s working world.

COIL as part of the Berlin joint project

TU Berlin is a member of the initiative “BeCOIL Collaborative Online International Learning – Verbundprojekt Berliner Hochschulen.” This Berlin network composed of nine partner universities aims to develop joint standards and use the partners’ synergy to expand the offer and quality of collaborative online international learning (COIL) at the Berlin universities. This will in turn strengthen collaboration both between the participating universities and with their international partners. Students unable to travel are also able to benefit from the digital transformation in international mobility through these international teaching and learning offers. Further information about the project and its different measures can be found on the BeCOIL website.

At TU Berlin, the BeCOIL project is coordinated by Student Mobility & International Students and the ZEWK’s Team digit.

“BeCOIL Collaborative Online International Learning – Verbundprojekt Berliner Hochschulen” is part of the digitalization and innovation area of focus of the Quality and Innovation Offensive (QIO), and is funded by the Berlin Senate.
