Protection of Transport Facilities – Project INFRANORM

Roads, rails, air traffic and water ways are the nerves of our society and economy. The transport routes and the related facilities such as train stations, airports, bridges, underground trains and ports are highly interlinked.

Due to these complex connections, a small event can have a great effect on the system as a whole. Extreme weather conditions, accidents or terror attacks can produce grave disruption. To keep this risk as small as possible, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding ten projects for the future safety of important transport infrastructures as part of the program “Research for civil security”.

Universities, institutes and industrial companies as well as engineers and social scientists are doing combined research with safety and rescue staff, government agencies and end users such as airport operators or transport system operators. All in all, 80 partners are involved. The research projects involve all the relevant stakeholders to enable an effective innovation process for the increase of safety of transport infrastructures.


INFRANORM is a cross sectional project

The DIN and the Technical University Berlin started INFRANORM in March 2010 as their 11th project.

INFRANORM is meant to initiate the development of norms and standards for the protection of transport infrastructure. During the run time of the projects, results will be produced for the development of norms and standards. In this iterative way, first DIN specifications will result during the time of the projects. The intention is to develop a “System of Systems” of technological components, which is to be the base of user-friendly and reliable solutions.

Additionally, the Technical University Berlin will develop a handbook of norms for safety research, which is to support the independent development of norms and standards proposals and further research projects.
