Content

The business simulation imparts business knowledge, shows interrelationships in a company and enables first steps in the corporate world. The business game deals with the takeover of a medium-sized company. In order to continue the business activities, the teams have to make decisions in the areas of development, purchasing, production, administration, finance and sales. The business game emphasizes active learning. The students should be able to interact with their team members, analyze situations and reflect on the results of their actions based on the theoretical content and the strategy determined by the teams themselves. Emphasis is placed on:

  •     Goal / strategy planning and implementation
  •     Sales planning - marketing mix (price, product, sales and communication policy)
  •     Capacity and cost planning
  •     Investment and contribution margin accounting
  •     Profit and loss statement
  •     Balance sheets

Organizational Matters

Registration

Registration for this course is required at the examination office or via QISPOS by Monday, 09.05.2022. The number of participants is limited to 30. Due to the limited number of participants in the course, it may not be possible to allocate a place to everyone who is interested. In order to ensure the fairest possible allocation of places, a multi-stage selection process will be carried out. First of all, an ISIS registration for the event is necessary. For this purpose, an online registration will be activated in ISIS on Monday, 04.04.2021, at 10 am. This online registration will be activated until Friday, 08.04.2022 at 5 pm.

If there are more than 30 applications after 08.04.2022, we will select students for the course based on a selection process. The selection process is carried out according to §10 of the Regulations of the Technical University of Berlin on the Rights and Responsibilities of Students (OTU) of May 23, 2012 and can be viewed here.
The list of participants (30 students) and the short-list of latecomers (10 students) will be published on ISIS on Monday, 11.04.2022 and students will be informed by email. Students on the list of participants need to confirm their participation no later than Wednesday, 13.04.2022. Otherwise, those waiting will move up accordingly.


Procedure

The business simulation consists of a weekly practical phase, as well as the writing of a business report in a downstream process. In the practical part of the module, students are divided into groups (company teams), each representing a company in a competitive market segment. The teams have to come up with a strategy of how they want to operate in the market and express this in decisions within different business areas of the company. Four business years are simulated with the help of software so that the students can understand and react to the consequences of their strategy and decision making. In addition, theoretical and practical knowledge is provided by the lecturer to support the participants in their decision-making. At the end of the practical phase, the results of the four fiscal years are presented by the respective teams at a company closing conference. The participants are also asked to reflect on their own position in the market at the end of the four fiscal years with regard to the strategy they have chosen. In preparation for the event, the participants must familiarize themselves with predefined topics (e.g. contribution margin accounting, marketing mix), as well as with the basic operation of the business game software and the course of the business game. After completion of the practical phase, the task of each group is to prepare a written report in the form of a business report. The annual report refers to the last fiscal year of the simulation and should contain all the typical elements of an annual report. In addition to key financial figures and quarterly overviews, the company itself, past developments and the current situation (risks/opportunities) should also be highlighted and, towards the end of the report, an outlook on future developments and strategy should be given.
