Tobias Heindel received the Diploma degree in physics from the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, Germany, in 2009. There he also started his PhD research in the field of non-classical light generation and demonstrated the first QKD experiment using electrically driven quantum light sources. In 2012 he joined Technical University of Berlin as Research Associate establishing quantum optics experiments to investigate deterministically fabricated quantum light sources. In parallel he received the PhD in physics from Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, Germany, in 2014 with the thesis title “Electrically pumped quantum-dot single-photon sources for quantum communication”. After 2014 he worked as postdoctoral researcher at Technical University of Berlin pushing the performance of deterministically fabricated quantum light sources for applications in quantum information processing. During this time he lead the spectroscopy division in the "Optoelectronics and Quantum Devices" group supervising various projects including BMBF-VIP, DFG, EURAMET MIQC2, and GIF. In 2018 the excellence of Dr. Heindel’s research was awarded with a Junior Research Group Grant (project QuSecure) by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) with a total budget of 3.1 million €. Since then Dr. Heindel leads the group Quantum Communication Systems at the Institute of Solid States Physics of Technical University of Berlin, which aims at the development of a quantum-secured communication testbed at the university campus. He had several research visits at renowned national as well as international research institutes, including the Ludwigs-Maximilians-University Munich and the Technion in Haifa, Israel. He authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journal articles, three book chapters, and one patent (h-index 29). Dr. Tobias Heindel received the Karl-Scheel-Prize 2020, being the most significant award of the Physical Society in Berlin (PGzB).
