Applying via uni-assist

Applicants who completed their primary university degree (such as Bachelor’s/undergraduate degree) from a foreign university (EU or non-EU) or who are currently studying at foreign university and want to apply with an ECTS certificate must apply using uni-assist’s online portal.

If you passed or will pass your primary university degree at a German university, please apply directly at TU Berlin.

Uni-assist pre-evaluates your application to ensure it is complete and meets the general admission requirements of TU Berlin. After successful preliminary evaluation, uni-assist will forward your application to TU Berlin and will inform you on this by email.

Uni-assist will process your application in 4-5 weeks. For this reason we recommend submitting your application as early as possible. Please ensure that your application documents are complete and that your personal data are correct. As we unfortunately cannot guarantee to inform you about missing documents before the end of the application period, there might be no time left to upload missing documents on time.

Uni-assist charges handling fees for the processing and evaluation of each application which must be paid by the applicant. TU Berlin does not pay the handling fees of their applicants.

Please note that you can submit only one Master’s application per semester. This also applies if your first application has been rejected. A second submitted application will then be rejected automatically.

Joint master's degree and Master of Education programs - multiple enrolment:

If you are enrolled as a degree-seeking student in a joint Master's degree program or a Master of Education in cooperation with TU Berlin at another Berlin university (Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Berlin University of the Arts), you can apply for multiple enrolment at TU Berlin.

Application for the Master's programme "Design and Computation" or "Computational Neuroscience"

The following application procedure also applies to applicants with foreign degrees who wish to apply for "Design and Computation" or "Computational Neuroscience".

Application process

Step 1

First of all, register at uni-assist or login if you already have a personal My assist account. Please fill in your personal information and educational history or update it.

Step 2

Please select your desired Master’s degree program from the list of study programs offered in the respective semester. You can use the search window or restrict the search criteria so as the study programs currently offered at TU Berlin will be presented to you (semester, university, type of degree via Advanced search).

Please select the semester you want to apply for which is usually the 1^st(starting semester of your studies). You can only apply for a higher semester if you have been enrolled and obtained credits from a previous Master’s degree program (for more information see below).

As you can apply for only one Master’s degree program per semester, please inform in advance which program is suitable for you and if you will meet the content-related/specific entry requirements of your desired study program. Please see our study options for detailed information on each study program.

Step 3

Fill in the application form. Make sure that your answers to the application-related questions are correct and truthful.

You can see your application form via “My Applications” > “My Application Overview” in your personal My assist account.

Step 4

Upload your documents (see the checklist below). Please give your documents an unambiguous namein German or English.

Via “My Applications” > “My Documents” you can upload and see the uploaded documents (see checklist below).

Please upload PDF files exclusively (max. 10 MB in size for each document)
Sort and scan your documents in the right order according to page numbers (e.g. transcript)
Upload different documents in separate files (e.g. High School Diploma and copy of passport/ID)
Please upload each document only once and choose a suitable file name (e.g. Bachelor’s degree certificate)

Attention: Uploaded documents cannot be deleted afterwards.

In case you have to scan your documents while not having a scanner at your disposal, you can also use a free scanning app on your smartphone.

TU Berlin reserves the right to request officially certified copies on a random basis or in reasoned suspected cases for enrolment.

Please do not send your documents as hard copies to uni-assist or TU Berlin in addition to the uploading.

Please mind the application deadlines (cut-off periods). Documents that are submitted after the application deadline will not be considered.

Please send your application only if your documents are complete. We kindly ask you to refrain from submitting further/additional documents at a later point in time, if possible.

If a subsequent submission of documents is absolutely necessary to meet the formal or content-related/specific entry requirements, you have the following option:

Uni-assist has not processed your application yet and the application period is still running: Upload the missing or updated documents onto your My assist account.
Uni-assist has already processed and forwarded your application to TU Berlin. The application period is still running: In this case, upload the documents to be submitted later via the upload form, stating your uni-assist application number as well as the requested personal information. You will receive a confirmation email when we have received your documents.

As an uni-assist applicant, you do not need to register via the online portal of the TU Berlin. Therefore, you do NOT have to register via the online registration, but enter the application number of uni-assist.

3. The application deadline has expired: Subsequent submission is not possible.

Further procedure:

Uni-assist will pre-review your application according to the criteria set by TU Berlin.

If your application fulfils the criteria, it will be forwarded to TU Berlin as soon as possible for further processing.

If your application is incomplete, you will be informed by uni-assist. Provided the application period is still running, you can complete your application until the application deadline.

TU Berlin will then carry out a final review of your application with regard to the formal criteria. You will not receive any notification from the TU Berlin that your application has been received or processed. We ask you here to refrain from enquiries and to check the status of your application in the portal.

The examinations board of the faculty will then verify your application to see if you meet the content-related/specific entry requirements.

For the Master’s degree programs with restrictions on admission, a selection procedure will normally take place.

At the end of the procedure, you will receive a letter of admission or rejection from us. You will find the letter of admission in tuPORT after successful admission, the letter of rejection will be sent by mail.

Via this portal you can see the current status of your application provided it has already been forwarded to TU Berlin by uni-assist.

including your university degree certificate as well as a summary of your study subjects, grades and credit points (transcript)

if you have not completed your Bachelor’s studies yet (at a university in the EU), an ECTS certificate with your current total number of ECTS credit points and your current average cumulative grade (GPA)

If existing, please upload the study and examinations regulations (“Studien- und Prüfungsordnung – StuPO”) as well as the module descriptions of your primary university degree program (in German or English) and highlight the sections that are relevant to the content-related/specific entry requirements of your desired Master’s degree program. This allows the examinations board to better manage the verification process and to correctly verify your application in regard to the content-related entry requirements.

3. Country-specific requirements

Applicants who graduated from universities in India, the People’s Republic of China, Vietnam, Mongolia and Iran have to additionally fulfil country-specific requirements. For more details, please see here: https://www.tu.berlin/en/go3032/.

Please check the information from uni-assist if you need to submit additional documents for your application, depending on the country where you graduated.

4. Further specific proofs and certificates (study program related)

Some of our Master’s degree programs require further specific proofs or certificates. For ex. a proof of English language proficiency. Please visit our website for more information on the specific requirements of your desired Master’s degree program (admissions requirements). If you have further questions on the formal requirements of these specific proofs and certificates or if you have questions with regard on content, please contact the responsible student advisory service of your desired Master’s degree program.
In case you have to submit work samples (e.g. for the Master’s degree program in Architecture), please submit it also as a PDF file together with your application documents.
Specific proofs and certificates might be requested as original documents or in the form of officially certified copies according to the admissions regulations (“Zugangs- und Zulassungsordnung (ZZO”)). These documents are to be submitted only electronically as a PDF files.

5. Proof of German language proficiency

PLEASE NOTE: As of an application for the summer semester 2022, Nationals of Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland with a foreign Master's entrance qualification also need a language certificate at the required level. Your identity card or passport is NOT sufficient proof of language skills!

6. Current certificate of enrolment or certificate of termination of enrolment (exmatriculation)

if you had/have been enrolled at a German university after your graduation from a foreign university
Please note: Your application will not be rejected if you fail to include this certificate. However, we cannot take account of your waiting period without it.

7. Proof of periods of civilian/military service

Proof of periods of civilian/military service, if applicable, according to article 7 (1) of the “Berliner Hochschulzulassungsgesetz (BerlHZG)” (Berlin higher education admissions law).

In the event of equal ranking in the selection procedure within the waiting period quota, priority will be given to applicants who meet the requirements specified in § 7. If there is still equality of rank after this, the decision will be made by lottery process.

9. Applying for a higher semester

For an application for a higher semester, the following additional documents have to be submitted to the TU Berlin Graduate Admissions Department in due form and time incl. the approval of the examinations board.
Credit transfer application - part A with the placement into the appropriate term of studying (“Fachsemester”) if you want to apply for a lateral entry in a Master’s degree course (“Quereinstieg”).
Credit transfer application - part A with the placement into the appropriate term of studying (“Fachsemester”) if you want to continue a formerly cancelled enrolment into a Master's degree program at TU Berlin (“Wiedereinschreiber*in”).
