Fundamentals of Optical Communication Technology

In the context of the growing demands of the Internet, increasing amounts of bandwidths must be provided. Due to the very high bandwith available in the optical spectral range, optical fiber is the ideal transmission medium for the highest information volumes. For this reason, today's fixed telecommunications network consist almost exclusively of fiber-optic transmission systems, with the excepion fo the subscriber line. In the course "Introduction to Optical Communication Technilogy" the necessary basics are taught.

Supplement to Optical Communications Technology

This module is a supplement to the module "Fundamentals of Optical Communication Technology".

The course "High Speed Optical Transmission Systems" deals with high bit rate optical transmission links from a system point of view. Basic concepts for high bit rate transmission technology are introduced and limiting effects in corresponding systems are considered.

In theONT seminar, students are given the opportunity to work largely independently on a topic in optical communications engineering and to present this in a technical paper.

High Frequency Technology

In this module, basic knowledge of passive and active components and networks of high-frequency technology is taught. In addition, the physical fundamentals of electromagnetic wave propagation in free space and in various waveguide structures are covered. Furthermore, high frequency properties of different semiconductor devices are discussed.

Project: Amateur radio

In the Amateur Radio project, students gain applied knowledge in the field of radio transmission, signal processing and the associated hardware and software components. The focus is not only on the technical results, but also on coordinated project work in an interdisciplinary team as well as basic scientific writing and presentation.

Within the framework of a project chosen by the students themselves, the following knowledge is imparted:

- methodological knowledge about planning and organizing projects

- applied knowledge about the transmission of radio waves: Properties of electromagnetic waves, components for the realization of transmit/receive circuits, antennas, transmitter-receiver path, modulation methods, operating modes, EMC, etc.

- practical hardware and/or software design as well as manufacturing or implementation

- expertise in the use of measurement equipment

- Scientific documentation and presentation of the work (paper and final presentation).
