The Corona Pre-Exploration Project is committed to contributing to the sustained control and prophylaxis of infections caused by SARS-CoV-2. It is a collaboration between several researchers from Charité, HU Berlin, FU Berlin, RKI and TU Berlin within the Berlin University Alliance (BUA).
The project is divided in five research areas:
The Department of Healthcare Management contributes to research area 6 by analysing the pandemic’s impact on the healthcare system in Germany and other European countries. To do so, a database encompassing data on COVID-19 cases, tests, hospitalisations, ICU treatment and ventilation from 30 European countries and two Italian regions was developed in March 2020. Data has been gathered from official online sources such as websites of ministries of health, national research and public health institutes, official dashboards from national institutions, Our World in Data (OWiD) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). There is a broad interest in our data, e.g. from the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Commission and the Institute for Health Metrics. The database has served as a tool to understand capacity needs for different waves in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and is being further developed as a preparedness tool for future outbreaks.
In addition to the database, other data sources are being used to assess the impact of COVID-19 on the German health system, including the data of hospitalized COVID-19 patients insured by AOK or nation-wide routine data on non-COVID-19 patients from the Institute for the Hospital Remuneration Systems (InEK). To complement information, data from the ambulatory sector will also be included in the analyses. Furthermore, expenditure figures and Public Health measures are taken into account, e.g. from the COVID-19 Health System Response Monitor (HSRM).
