Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID)

The Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is a unique identifier for researchers. It enables persons to be linked to their publications, research data and other research output and is now the international de facto standard. The University Library recommends all researchers to register with ORCID and to cite their personal ORCID in their publications as well as when submitting third-party funding proposals.

How ORCID works: Complete an ORCID profil

  1. Register for an ORCID in just 30 seconds
  2. Complete anORCID profile and link it to other IDs (e.g. Scopus Author ID, Researcher ID), and select your privacy settings.
  3. Create publication lists either by importing (from Google Scholar, Web of Science, CrossRef or other sources) or by entering manually.
  4. Use your ORCID ID on your own website and when applying for third-party funding and submitting manuscripts, and on your business card.

The advantages of ORCID for science

  • Uniquely identifies a person (regardless of identical names, name changes, or multiple spellings)
  • Clear attribution of biographical information and individual research output (e.g. publications, research data, software)
  • Enables automatically updating publication lists
  • Privacy protection, data protection
  • Simplifies communication with funding organizations, expert associations, publishers and repositories (e.g. when applying for third-party funding, submitting manuscripts, or registering for conferences)
  • Simplified documentation of entire research output of universities, faculties, institutes and research groups

Privacy and data protection

Privacy and data protection are fundamental principles of ORCID. Once you have registered, you retain complete control over who can view which profile details and publications. Only your name and your ORCID ID are always public. You can change your privacy settings to limit access to all other information.

ORCID as international de facto standard

ORCID is internationally established in the academic world. This independent, nonprofit initiative is used by research institutions such as CERN; research funding institutions such as the UK’s Wellcome Trust; publishers such as Springer Science + Business Media, Elsevier, and Wiley; databases such as Web of Science; and countless journals. With more than 3 million registered authors as of February 2017, ORCID is the de-facto standard for identifying individuals, comparable to ISBN for books and DOI for online publications. To promote ORCID in Germany and its lasting implementation at degree-granting institution and extramural research institutions, the German Research Foundation (DFG) funds the ORCID DE project since early 2016. Since June 2019 the TU Berlin is a member of this project. In October 2019 the TU Berlin published its new Policy on Affiliation and recommends all the members of TU Berlin to get an ORCID-ID and state the correct Affiliation in the profile.
