ERC Funding Lines

The European Research Council (ERC) funds cutting-edge research in all scientific disciplines. The sole evaluation criterion is the excellence of the principal investigator and of the proposed project. The ERC funding lines are based on the career stages of the applicants:

ERC Starting Grants

  • For promising early-career researchers with 2–7 years experience since completion of PhD
  • Up to EUR 1.5 million funding (in exceptional cases up to EUR 2.5 million)
  • For a period of up to 5 years
  • At least 50% working time commitment of the PI
  • Open call: ERC Starting Grants

ERC Consolidator Grants

  • For outstanding researchers with 7–12 years experience since completion of PhD
  • Up to EUR 2 million funding (in exceptional cases up to EUR 3 million)
  • For a period of up to 5 years
  • At least 40% working time commitment of the PI

ERC Advanced Grants

  • For established research leaders with a recognized track record of research achievements
  • Up to EUR 2.5 million funding (in exceptional cases up to EUR 3.5 million)
  • For a period of up to 5 years
  • At least 30% working time commitment of the PI
  • Open call: ERC Advanced Grants

ERC Synergy Grants

  • For groups of 2 to 4 outstanding researchers
  • Up to EUR 10 million funding (in exceptional cases up to EUR 14 million)
  • For a period of up to 6 years
  • At least 30% working time commitment of the PIs

ERC Proof of Concept Grants

  • For researchers who already have an ERC Grant and want to explore the commercial or societal potential of their work
  • Up to EUR 150,000 funding
  • For a period of up to 18 months
