Issue 01.2022 (February)
Dear Doctoral Candidates and Postdocs at TU Berlin,
Dear Readers,
We are delighted to present the first edition of our CJS Newsletter. Founded in 2020, the Center for Junior Scholars (CJS) is the central institution for the advancement of junior scholars and offers various services and advising for doctoral candidates and postdocs at TU Berlin. The proMotion program for female doctoral candidates and the ProFiL program for female postdocs can also be found under one roof at the CJS. In this first edition of our newsletter, we would like to introduce our offers and ourselves as well as inform you about upcoming events. We as the entire team of the CJS are looking forward to your questions and visits – online of course initially, but hopefully in person before long.
We hope you enjoy reading the newsletter and look forward to a lively exchange with you on the topic of advancing junior scholars!
Best wishes,
Prof. Dr. Annette Mayer
Do you have questions about registering your intention to do a doctorate, enrollment, the benefits of a supervision agreement, or how you can still manage to do your doctorate alongside your teaching duties or project work? Or perhaps you are nearing the end of your doctorate and worrying about submission, your scientific defense or your future plans. We are available to TU doctoral students and postdocs for confidential advising, including in cases of conflict. However, we will also refer you if there are more more suitable contact partners. Additionally, we are happy to help you network among each other, whether through a collegial inspiration group of 3-6 PhD students or the Young Academics Network (YAN), established two years ago by TU junior professors and junior research group leaders.
You can always reach us at the email address or phone number below or drop by our online advising hours on Webex every Monday from 11:00 to 12:00. We look forward to meeting you!

Career support for high-achieving female scholars with ProFiL
The ProFiL program was expanded and supplemented by an English ProFiL line for international female scholars.
Since 2004, FU, HU and TU Berlin have been very successful in supporting female scholars on the path to professorships through the ProFiL program. With financial support of the Berlin University Alliance, ProFiL has now substantially expanded the number of program participants and can now offer an English ProFiL line for international female scholars. During the 15th round from July 2021 to July 2022, 54 participants will be supported in their further career development and prepared for the leadership tasks required of professors. ProFiL is aimed at female private lecturers, postdoctoral researchers, junior professors, junior research group leaders, habilitation candidates and postdocs at the sponsoring universities and the Social Science Research Center Berlin. For the English ProFiL line, international female scholars at Charité can also apply.
The deadline for applications to the 16th ProFiL round closes 25.02.2022. A total of 66 high-achieving female scholars will receive support.
The qualification program for all doctoral students of the network partners
The Excellence Network offers all doctoral students at the four partner institutions a comprehensive qualification program reflecting the different phases of a doctorate. The program includes five core events:
In addition to these core events, the cooperating institutions offer further workshops, coaching services and mentoring programs that are also open to doctoral students from the other BUA partners.
Are you interested in gaining international experience during your PhD or postdoc and require further information? Would you like to attend a conference abroad? Or perhaps you already have a concrete plan for a research stay abroad and want to learn more about formal requirements? Even though the current pandemic situation allows only limited international mobility at the moment, it is good to plan these stays in advance. The CJS Guide to International Mobility provides a compact overview of the most important information and TUB contact persons for funding opportunities, mobility programs, legal regulations and insurance.

Technische Universität Berlin seeks to attract new generations of students and academics by offering initiatives for school students as well as degree programs, doctoral and postdoc positions, and junior professorships. Diversity and variety play a key role here. For doctorates, this includes working within a research group, cooperative forms of support and supervision, and dissertations in collaboration with companies. The postdoc phase focuses on independent projects, junior research groups, and junior professorships.
