Assignments

As curator of the mineralogical collections of the TU Berlin and scientific member of the department of Applied Geochemistry it is my task to administrate, develop and present the mineralogical collections to the public as well as to support and expand the teaching and research in the field of mineralogy and petrology. The main aim is to combine the Mineralogical Collections and science in mutual interaction. For this purpose, corresponding specimens of the collections are brought in and dealt with both in teaching and research.

The Mineralogical Collection consists of over 200,000 specimens, of which selected pieces are displayed in the exhibition of the Mineralogical Museum of the TU (BH building 6th floor). A major thematic priority of the collections is both the classification of minerals and the demonstration of the importance of mineralogy and geology (applied geosciences) in modern society. A specific focus lies on the collection of specimens from Namibia and Hagendorf (Germany).

Scientific fields related to the Mineralogical Collections

Thematic interests, which are addressed in the Mineralogical Collections, are focused on the following main topics:

  • Historical development of the Mineralogical Collections of the TU Berlin
  • Colonial context of minerals of the Mineralogical Collections
  • Classification system of mineral specimens
  • Mineral and rock identification
  • Genesis of magmatic and metamorphic rocks
  • 2D/3D Digitalization of mineral and rock specimens
  • Gemmology

Research Interest

My research interests are interdisciplinary covering research fields of mineralogy, petrology, economic geology and geochemistry. Focus of my research is related to carbonatite and carbonatite-related mineral deposits with following objectives:

  • Syn- and post-magmatic mineralogical and mineral chemical modification of Carbonatites: contamination vs. metamorphism (e.g., Giebel et al. 2019b, Giebel et al. in prep.).
  • Hydrothermal evolution and ore forming processes in carbonatite and carbonatite related deposits (e.g., Giebel et al. 2017, Walter et al. 2020).
  • The genesis and ascent mechanisms of carbonatitic magmas (e.g., Giebel et al. 2019a, Walter et al. 2021).
  • The genetic association of carbonatites and phoscorites (e.g., Giebel et al. 2019a).
