The students should learn and practice obtaining and enforcing patents using practical (in particular also process engineering) examples. One focus is that the students learn how to deal with patent specifications in order to be able to assess patent infringements, for example. Furthermore, the concise formulation of the essence of the invention, the preparation and execution of patent applications, problems of licensing law and the performance of searches and the drafting of oppositions are to be practiced. After the course, students should be able to evaluate patent law problems that arise in practice and work out possible solutions. It is also a learning objective to be able to present a complex technical and legal issue in an understandable way in a report and to formulate alternative solutions. This ability has significance beyond the actual topic of the project course. The students independently carry out complex technical searches in patent databases.
