Two-factor authentication

Short description

ZECM secures IT services with additional two-factor authentication. This increases the security of the IT infrastructure and your data. During the setup of your TUB account, you choose between the app-based TOTP procedure (Time-based One-Time Password) and a TAN list.

Status

General

For many security-relevant IT services of the TU Berlin, two-factor authentication is used to confirm actions. The ZECM offers various procedures for this purpose:

The TOTP procedure uses a smartphone app that continuously generates the required TAN numbers after initial set-up. It is the safest and most convenient of the procedures offered and has other advantages:

  • Can be used offline (no internet connection and no mobile network required)
  • Can also be used abroad
  • Independent of model
  • Free of charge

The TAN procedure uses lists with numbered TANs printed on paper (or digitally stored). Please cross out the used TANs on the list.

Due to the above-mentioned advantages, the ZECM recommends the TOTP procedure.

The former mTAN procedure via SMS is only offered for existing users and is no longer available for new TU members.

To note

  • If you have lost your TAN list, you will receive a new active TAN list in person at ZECM IT Service Desk.
  • The mTAN procedure cannot be set up again at present. An existing procedure can still be used.
  • Due to high load, during peak hours some mobile phone providers do not receive the mTANs needed to log into our services in time. ZECM considers the mTAN procedure to be outdated and prone to failure and recommends TOTP as the standard procedure for 2-factor authentication.

Frequently asked questions

I have lost my mobile phone or would like to use a new one. How do I activate the TOTP token procedure on a new device?

If you still have your QR code, you can also use it to activate another device.

If you no longer have a QR code, please contact the ZECM IT Service Desk. There you will receive a new QR code after a personal identification.
Please bring a valid identification document for identity verification and install one of the suggested TOTP apps on your smartphone/tablet in advance, if necessary: for instance for Android "andOTP" or "Google Authenticator", for iOS "OTP Auth" or "Google Authenticator".

Can I deactivate the TOTP token procedure?

No. You can only switch to the alternative TAN list procedure. For a large number of TU Berlin services, a TAN procedure is mandatory as a second factor.

My TAN list only contains a few unused TAN numbers. How do I get a new TAN list?

As long as you can still log in to the TU portal, you have the option of generating a new TAN list.

If you no longer have an unused TAN number, please contact IT Service Desk. There you will receive a new TAN list after a personal identification. Please bring a valid identity document with you for the identity check.

In principle, we recommend that you use the new app-based TOTP token procedure. Our colleagues on site will be happy to assist you with the changeover. If necessary, install a corresponding OTP app on your smartphone/tablet in advance: for instance for Android "andOTP" or "Google Authenticator", for iOS "OTP Auth" or "Google Authenticator".

The mTAN procedure is still active in my account, but my mobile phone number has changed. How can I enter a new phone number?

Unfortunately, the phone numbers can no longer be updated.

In this case, we recommend that you switch to the new app-based TOTP token procedure. Please contact IT Service Desk. The colleagues on site will be happy to support you in switching to the new procedure. If you do not have a smartphone, you will alternatively receive a TAN list.

For identity verification, please bring a valid identification document and, if necessary, install an appropriate OTP app on your smartphone/tablet in advance: for instance for Android "andOTP" or "Google Authenticator", for iOS "OTP Auth" or "Google Authenticator".

Can I deactivate the mTAN procedure?

However, you will then have to switch to an alternative TAN procedure (TOTP token or TAN list procedure), as a TAN procedure is mandatory as a second factor for a large number of TU Berlin services.
